    Where to pick up supply

    Audis3 (2000) + Kenwood head unit + Freedom 250gig usb drive

Well i think ive almost answered my own question?! Im attempting to fit a USB hard disk in car, seems the supply from the headunit isn't enough (it spins up) but reading forums isn't enough as head unit says (N/A).

Anyway ive found a cheap n cheerful switchable (5v) supply from Maplins

    http://www.maplin.co.uk/Module.aspx?ModuleNo=228639

Gonna pipe it into the glove box, is there a feed in near there easy to pick up, or do just route a feed down from my head unit?

Presumably your USB drive doesn't run off 12v DC?
If it's a 12v dc drive then you don't need any additional electronics, just take a feed from the fusebox, add a fuse and away you go. The adapter from Maplins is to run an accessory from the cigarette lighter socket which requires less than 12v, like a phone charger etc.

    Hi Andy,

well, its a Freecom external USB drive and clearly states 5vDC next to the power socket. But i digress, the issue is when i plug the drive in the head unit cannot read the drive (formatted FAT32), then i googled and found discussions about some drives needing ext psu due to small current from usb feed in head unit. But it does spin up (but to what speed???) and looking at KEnwood's site for my head unit:

    USB Version compatibility 1.1 / 2.0
    File System FAT 16/32
    Maximum Supply current 500mA
    MP3 Decode Compliant with MPEG-1/2 Audio Layer-3
WMA Decode Compliant with Windows Media Audio
    AAC Decode AAC-LC "m4a" Files
    Max. nr. of files 65025
    Max. nr. of folders 50

From Kenwood site. "Availabilty of USB interface port (front or rear) to connect USB applications like USB memory stick and USB Harddisks.
From 2007, selected models can also control an iPod using optional interface cables (detailed information) "
