would part number 8PO 035 186 fit my 2001 S3 it's a single din concert tape player in there at the min want to change it to single disc concert it's out of a "a3 2005"

It will work, but unlikely the trim will fit or match as it's out of a completely different model of A3. You need to find a Concert II from an 8L ideally, and ensure it has the code as Audi will charge for unlocking it. Not sure what the part number is but it needs to be one without the chrome trim at the top as those are definately A4/A6 models.
