when the unit is installed it goes into safe mode ok, but when the code is put in, it goes to radio for a couple of seconds then powers off completely, any ideas ?

Are you installing this as a retrofit into a different car?
You may find the Chorus is CANBUS controlled and your car isn't or vice-versa, this will give you a power up issue and you'll need to turn the HU on/off manually and it will turn itself off after 60mins.
Does it do the same thing with the ignition on?

Took the chorus out my TT to fit a diff HU but didn't like it so put the chorus back in, same wiring etc, but just powers off completely after a couple of secs after code is inputted.
