had to removed the old HU from my 95 a4 yesterday and upon lifting it out of its compartment i was greeted by one of the worst bodged wiring jobs iv ever seen, so iv stripped all the wires back and neatened it up, sorted all the speaker cables out and what im left with is 4 cables, now iv only ever fitted two HU's in my past and they have been as simple as removing the old one and plugging in the new one. this time however im going to have to wire it in. other than the speaker cables what are the 4 wires im left with? i can go and take a picture if needed..

If it's a completely stock system then you only have front speaker cables at the HU. The rears are driven off a puny little amp bolted to the rear left deck speaker.
You'll need to take a picture really, there should be a left & right pre-out & a screen & remote turn on wire to feed the rear amp. These could be the 4 wires you have left, but a picture will help.
