I have just had installed a new h/u amp and sub+box

One of my friends had a look at the sub and said it was facing the wrong way.

The way it was fitted is within a ported box, within the boot, the box hard against the back of the back seats, with the speaker facing up at the parcel shelf.

Friend claims that the box is correctly against the back of the back seat but that the speaker should be facing the tail of the car, he claims that this will sound better as the driver will use all the open space infont of it to produce better base

Is this true or nonsense ???????

Really!!!!! oh well, thx for replying Andy, what is the science behind this>???

Hearsay & speculation. It's not gonna make a huge difference as it's a big boot, but it's all to do with phase cancellation and reflected sound. Ideally you want any reflected sound waves and direct wave to hit the driver roughly at the same time otherwise you get phase cancellation which destroys the thump. So by facing the sub backwards most of the waves will bounce off the boot and into the car. With it facing upwards, you'll get a mix of waves bouncing off the underside of the parcel shelf and others bouncing off the boot, so the sound hitting the driver will be a right old mess.
