Symphony II Aux input for any mp3/pda etc - Sorted!!

ok, Have been PM'd about this too, so I hope that this will be a useful thread!

I have a 2004 A4, with the double-din Symphony stereo, with the 6-CD changer built in to the unit in the dash.

I wanted to be able to put any MP3 source into this directly, NOT via a nasty FM modulator etc (have tried those, very unimpressed) .

Have received lots of conflicting advice, and links to German ebay sellers, who tell me it wont work anyway!

caraudiocentre.co.uk were also categoric that it could not be done, as according to them the symphony has no facility to connect external CD changer or any other input.. (I shall reply to their mail later!)

However - www.incarexpress.co.uk were very helpful - up to the point of emailing me a photo of the Symphony stereo, to make sure that it really was the right unit being discussed...

They sold me this: http://www.incarexpress.co.uk/view_p...artno=AUD01AUX and it arrived today.

I had previously picked up a set of 4 stereo removal keys, so tonight I whipped out the stereo, and did a quick 'proof of concept' before attempting a proper install which I will do at the weekend..

..and it works perfectly! press the CD button on the symphony once, you get the normal built in changer.. press it again, you get the aux in..

No it isnt integrated witht the symphony controls (like the dension ice link is for an ipod) but I wanted to be able to use my existing archos AV380, as well as my sons being able to connect their respective Ipod and Creative players when they are in the car..

Sound quality was absolutely fine, its very easy, and just what the doc ordered.

If anyone is interested I will take pics when I do the full install at the weekend..

    Ben

Yep; thats the method the dension ice link uses. Sound quality is excellent.

Some pics, in case you are interested!

Stereo removal keys, make the job VERY much easier - bear in mind that for double-DIN stereos like the symphony you will need 4 of these. They fit into the small horizontal slots in the fascia.. need to go all the way in til they click..

Symphony II stereo, still in dash, one stereo removal key in place:

The various bits provided with the kit (note the keys were bought separately): The first loom, then the white interface box has a DIN plug for the Aux-in connectors next to it, a set of small DIP switches, and on the rear, a long connector for the second loom shown on the right of the picture.

The rear of the Symphony, newly released from the dash. If you look where the 10A fuse is, on the left, then the block to be unplugged is the large black one below it (closer to the camera) - with a small spring clip at each end.

The connector on the lead supplied - this as you can see is in three parts - The yellow and green are from the 1st loom, the blue is from the second - the blue section simply clips on to the green section as shown in order to complete the assembly of this block, which then plugs into the interface unit.

If you follow the supplied instructions to set the DIP switches on the back of the interface unit (very easy, the two end switches needed to be set to 'on' for mine) you can then hook the rest of it up. You can't get this wrong, really.. but you do need to provide an earth connection for two wires, clearly labelled. I simply connected these to one of the case screws on the back of the stereo (Expecting to be told thats a bad thing now!)

The completed loom, now in place. Note the black connector previously plugged into the Symphony is now connected to the red connector on the end of the lead supplied.

The white interface box was simply tucked neatly in the space to the rear of the climate controls, to the left.. The audio lead then dropped through the left side of the centre console, tucked in and back along, comes out to the rear of the handbrake and connects to the MP3 player in the armrest!

Popped the stereo back in, refitted the nokia cradle, thats it, job done - sound quality is FINE.

Total time: about 15 minutes, a good chunk of which was fiddling with the nokia cradle and fiddling witht the removal keys (you need to pull quite firmly..!)

Hope this helps for anyone interested!

    Ben

indeed, and an omission on my part - Pictures were courtesy of Mr Hacz himself.. lighting provided by his 1million candlepower torch, held by two 36" quickgrips, images provided by his 24Megapixel Box Brownie, and if you look closely at the right of the fourth pic, you will observe one of Hacz' bodily appendages making its presence known..

All Audi HU's have a CD changer port, so with the right adapter you can always get an AUX in to work. No idea why all those muppets said it couldn't be done.
