In terms of after market, single din or double. Would any after market unit fit and work or is there specific ones?
Or is it a case of all work but some integrate better?

Any aftermarket unit will fit and work, but you need a fascia adapter and wiring adapters with all of them. Depending on your vehicle, the only ones that plug straight in are Blaupunkt and Becker which use the same mini ISO connection that earlier Audi's used up to about 2002/3. There are no HU's that use the quadlock connections on later models

how about if i wanted to go from single to double?
Is there any units that have removable screens or something as like? I really want a 7" panel but im worried of the little bleeders trying to nick it!

They all have removable screens, but going single to double requires a new centre console with lower climate control unit.
