My friend has an 2008 sportback and is a basic spec and therefore has no speakers in the back doors. Is it possible to add these speakers, are they pre-wired? There is no option to fade to rear but assume the radio is the same, just coded? I think it's a chorus radio.

You can add the speakers, but you will have nothing to drive them. The rears are driven by the tiny amp inside the subwoofer, which you also won't have along with the wiring loom to the sub/amp. So you would need to get hold of the non Bose subwoofer, rear speakers and more importantly the wiring loom from HU to boot. So not an easy job. You'd be far better off getting an aftermarket HU and then just wiring the speakers directly to it, or buy a small aftermarket 2ch amp and use that to drive the new rears. You should be able to pick up the stock rears on ebay, they are the same as the stock fronts - 6.5" components with a 1" tweeter. Ones from a B6 A4 will also fit.
