Hey people.

I recently bought an Audi A3 1.8s. I love the car but the headset is awful and doing my head in. Its the standard type but is damaged so deffo needs to be changed... It looks huge in size, if I buy a standard headset will it fit in? or will i have to buy new surround trim or similar to fit around the new headset?

I'm not looking to upgrade my audio massively, just want a headset that i can plug my ipod into and play mp3s off it.

I would be really greatful for any pointers and maybe even ideas for what headset will fit and what to buy thats decent but not super expensive.

Thanks in advance :detective2:

Hi there. The head unit is a standard DIN size, it's just the fascia that overhangs either side so you will need blanking plates to fill the gaps if you go aftermarket. You can link an iPOD to th standard HU, you just need an xcarlink or similar to fool the HU into thinking it has an cd changer attached to give you a proper audio input.
I would go for a Becker GP 7992 if you have the money, as it's a fantastic HU and looks stock so won't trash the look of the dash. It also takes the standard Audi wiring so you won't need a harness adapter and it works with Bose OK without the popping issue. You will need an aerial amp adapter to power the aerial.

Hi Andy thanks for the reply.

I have decided to buy this kit and have recently ordered it:

http://www.caraudiocentre.co.uk/product_m-jbl-gto1202d-dub2502-bx12_p-22567.htm

Seems like a fair bit of kit for 90 pounds delivered. Will the headset you mentioned run that? Also how much is the headset you mentioned as I can't find it for sale.
I was looking at this headset, seems pretty cheap for what it is:

Where can I get these blanking plates you mentioned as Audi seem to want a silly amount of money for them.

Im sorry if any of my questions seem ignorant, but Im new to car audio so appologies in advance.

MQ.

That Kenwood has no pre-outs so you can't use it with a sub unless you go down the speaker input route which is nasty.
You need a HU with an independent sub woofer pre-out so you can adjust the level of the sub independently from the front & rear speakers.
The Becker is £300 so you really get what you pay for, reasonable quality will be £180-£300.
The fascia plates are here:

Antenna amp adapter:

Rear amp adapter (otherwise the rears won't work):
http://www.caraudiodirect.co.uk/audi-active-wiring-adaptor.html
Personally I would rewire the rears directly to the HU as you will be running your own sub. The adapter above links the rear pre-outs to the Audi rear amp but it only has 2 x 20w peak so will be completely drowned out by the 2 x 50w going to the fronts.

Hi Andy,

You seem like a bit of a guru when it comes to Audi ICE installations.

Regarding my thread, the sub/amp package I ordered my little brother has been begging me to let him have it so I did.So I'm back to square one..

So I still have my faulty standard head unit in my Audi A3 (99 plate).

I'm happy with the sound quality from the speakers in the car and have no issues with that. My only issues are those that the HU are causing me.

I want a HU that will fit in with minimal problems and my only requirement is it must hav an AUX port on the front.

Cash is tight so looking for a cheap option ideally 150 (or less) all in for the new HU plus any bits I might need for its install. I'm not after anything amazing and hasn't gotta look jazzy. Just want a working HU!

Can you advise me what you would do in my situation.

Cheers:sadlike:

PS. The fault on my stereo is the volume, if I try to turn it up even a tiny bit it goes to maximum. Then if I try to turn it down it goes to minimum! Is this a common fault?
