Hi - normally hang around the S3 8L threads but after some advice from the A4 crowd pls...

Colleague at work has a facelift/newer shape A4 2.0 SE Y plate 103k in met grey - back at the beginning of the year I understand either the water pump or oil pump failed and he basically drove it and fried the engine through overheating - well his garage (one man band type) had the car for absolutely ages working on the bottom end replacing bits and bobs to find that when it was re-assembled the cylinder head was knackered - my colleague has tried to find one and given up (he's not a car type) and is now looking at getting the car back to his house and leaving it there till next year and he does not want to spend any more money on it and has two other cars - one a company car that was delivered shortly after the A4 went wrong...

Anyway I'm tempted to buy the car cheap - i was thinking about 1k if possible and source a complete engine from a breakers - thinking it will cost around 1k - 1.5k to do a proper job (£500 for the engine, towing £100, labour £500 + misc upto £400), I have a very good vw/audi specialist that i use local to me that is cheap - low overheads/cash etc...

Q. Do my figures stack up?
Q.Does anyone know if the Audi 2.0 pre fsi is the same unit as the Passat/Bora 2.0 - if it is there must be loads out there which will make finding a decent one easier and the project more of a goer ??
Q.I'm guessing a replacement engine will not reduce the re-sale value if it's been updated etc with DVLA ?

Thanks
