Though the latest Audi "book", which you should have got through the mail will be there.
My local VW dealer is like that. The parts dept is a small island in the middle of the showroom, the parts guys dont really seem set up to retail parts at all. Whereas the Audi dealership has a side door for for parts department and a counter with racks of spares behind them, just like it should be.

Now, to me that sounds really weird, I was assuming that VW was being "old school" and Audi had made sure that it was "above that" - but it seems like it comes down to how each dealership operates, main site for my VW dealership operates like you have said, and operates out of a shiny new building, the site I visit used to be privately owned and an old in-town site, though now owned by the bigger chain. Entrance to the parts department is via an external side door.

All I can say to you is to enjoy it as long as it lasts, progress will mess it eventually!

Well i have noticed under hard acceleration this is some smoke from the car but not all the time. I was told this was perfectly normal as i spend most of the time driving around town. So when i finally do give it some there will be a bit.

Ok guys so a quick update. Since i started the thread i have covered 103 miles. So you guys saw what the oil indicator was telling me.
As i was approaching lakeside yesterday afternoon with the wife and kids. I get a nice little warning light and message on the dash!!!

Oil low. Add 1L oil and continue driving. The MMI said this Please add oil (max 1l).You may continue driving to a workshop. As you can imaging i blew a fuse! Lucky i had just under 1L oil left in the 5L oil can.

So i went shopping let the car cool down and topped up when i got back. To my surprise when i popped the bonnet i could see where the oil cap is and the area around it was dirty like someone has tried to fill oill in there and managed to poor most of it down the side or the engine. It looked like someone tried to clean it up but didn't do a very good job as you could see the dirt attached to it now.

Anyway needless to say i am going to take this up with Audi on Tuesday. I am going to mention the smoke under hard acceleration again and also the fact that someone missed when they tried to put oil in. Plus the fact my car asked me for oil some 1500 miles after it has a full service!!!! I am not a happy chappy this morning. Oh joy

I was told there is a history of these filler caps leaking - and so needing the rubber gasket replacing. My car was slightly wet - only noticed a few days after picking it up from dealer - probably like you, once some crap had stuck to the oily surfaces. I cleaned my slight mess up, I think that I removed, cleaned and refitted the rubber seal, and almost 11 months later there has been no further "showing" of engine oil leaking out.

Though it does sound like your engine had a lot more oil spilled/leaked on it.

My 2000MY Passat B5 2.8 V6, lasted its 13+ years with me without needing a new rubber filler cap seal, my wife's 2003MY Polo 9N 1.4 needed a new seal after 4 years, sometimes thes easy to design parts end up being turned into crap to save some money - or to give a new graduate a useful first job!

I thought there maybe a leak from somewhere. I checked the cap and it was dry around the edges. The oil around the engine does not look fresh like a leak from the oil cap. You can see in the pictures the oil around the cap and going down the engine. It actually goes further down the left hand side and deeper into the engine bay. It really looks like oil was spilled and someone tried to clean it up.

    photo.jpg

Again I could be wrong and maybe there is a leak somewhere. I almost wonder if they oil was even changed now lol. Who knows! Again if it was leaking from the oil cap you would think i would see some drips somewhere or in my drive. As the way things have gone in 1500 miles having to put oil in means the 6l or so that should have been in there has gone somewhere.

OK had a call just now. It has to have the oil consumption test done. When they topped the oil up it took on 200ml more. So the question now is why the car said add oil when it was full of oli. I have to drive it 600 miles and take it back now. so much fun

AFN1980, what age and mileage is your car? I'm starting to get worried as I thought all this oil consumption stuff was meant to have been sorted out by now on any "at risk" aged cars.

Hey my car is a June 2010. It has done 48.5K miles. Don't get worried it could just be my luck. The check and could not find an oil leak anywhere. So now i have to do the consumption test. Again they agree with me that the light should never had come on. They will drain the oil and weigh it once i have done the test to see what the issue is. I know the guide from Audi is that every 1000km/600miles it will use about 1/2 a liter.

I too have a potential oil consumption issue. Bought my 2010 S4 mid May at which point it was sent off to an audi dealer nearby the seller who serviced it. I never thought to check the oil until around 2 weeks later and to my surprise found it was half way between the min and max point on the display. I also suspected that the dealer had not put enough oil in at the service so decided to put in half a litre. This then took it up to max but I contacted the dealer from where I bought the at from to make sure it was logged.

Then took the car into my local Audi who were booked in to do an oil consumption test for £60 (place I bought the car from agreed to pay this). Then after about 3 hours Audi rang to say that they now needed a breather pipe to do the test which would e another £85 or so plus vat. So they topped up with oil again and said to either keep an eye on it or book it back in for the consumption test. Waste of a day off!

It's worth noting that on the record Audi say it is acceptable for the car to burn up to a litre of oil every 1k miles. This doesn't seem right to me but apparently bmw and merc are the same. Sounds to me like a get out of jail free card for the manufacturers!

So at the moment I tripped the mileage when they topped up the oil and will keep an eye in it but if I ad not sure it will get booked back in for the consumption test.

Be interested to hear how you get on and good luck!

Ps the service advisor claimed it was the 2.0t engines that suffered with oil consumption issues not the 3.0 but I took that with a pinch of salt!

Luckily my car is still under warranty. So am not paying anything for any of the tests. (may have to if there is not an issue but they have not said anything about that). Plus they are confused as to why the light came on after only being serviced 8 weeks/1200 miles ago

The car is still in there as I had a problem with the auto tailgate which is having 2 new motors put in as it was creaking and and slamming shut at times.

I will do the 600 miles withing 2 weeks so it will be back in. Will see what they say then. Will keep everyone posted. The gutting thing for me is that once it is sorted I need to sell the car. Need to downgrade as time to splash on a house!

If the oil indicator message appears before you reach 600 miles, don't hang around...get it to the garage. I just took mine for a 100 mile round trip because I want it repaired next week. The oil level is down to just over 1/2. I will never reach 600 miles! Probably do the same trip again tomorrow night just to get the level down quicker.

Will get it in for sure. I am going to pick it up in a few hours. Will do the mileage within a few weeks. Fingers cross the light doesn't come on. It will go back and they will check it. I want it to be 100% before I sell it. So will make sure this is sorted.

If the car is under warranty you shouldn't have any problems with getting it repaired.

You have to run the full course before the garage will look at it.

Hey, Well I am getting a bit annoyed now lol. This MMI is doing my head in. So i have now covered 445 miles in total since it was in at Audi. In the last 3 days the MMI has given me 3 different readings.

Friday evening MMI shows up at 40% oil used (using the car for daily commute).
Sunday eveing after an 80 mile drive MMI is showing 10% used!!
This morning 6 mile drive MMI now showing 25% used

I have 180 miles to go. Car is hopefully going in on Monday next week. I am going to wait with it as they said it will take 1 hour to check the oil out.

Am going to order the dipstick tomorrow. I am wondering if the car is really using that much oil or if i have a faulty sensor or something.

Will keep you all posted on results from driving this week and the outcome on Monday.

    Cheers

Have you been running the car + engine for some thing like 10 miles, park on level ground, switch off, wait 10>20 minutes, switch only ignition on, wait maybe 5 or 10 minutes until there is some oil level info available - then accepting that as being a true reading. I was getting erratic/inconsistant level readings until I stuck closely to what I've described above.

In other words, cut out this stupid sensor business and buy a dip stick for the long term, as that way you can measure the oil level BEFORE you start the engine, I do understand why you are currently checking the level though!

I have been doing what you have mentioned above. I don't wait as long but I normally check it after i have done good mileage. This mornings check was because of the strange readings on the weekend.

I normally leave the car for 10 mins or so then go back out to it put the key in and wait 5 mins. Then i get a reading. I am happy to do it for longer.

I will be ordering the dipstick tomorrow. Just want this sorted now. Cheers for the advice.

This doesn't bowed well for selling an oil burning a4 for a s4, if they have the same problem?

The question is do they have the same problem. I have had a look around and not seen loads on the S4 having issues like the 2.0T

standard for these cars is half liter every 1000KM. Mine is using loads more. lol

Well according to the MMI and warning system.

    Same standard as the 2.0t

I don't wanna spend 10k ontop of my a4 as a trade in, then have problems.

I have just changed over to Millers Nanodrive CTS 5w-40, mine was using about 1 litre every 4000 miles. Interestingly enough I have just moved my Focus ST170 over to 5w-30 Castrol edge from Fuch Titan Race 5w-30 and I have had to top it up 500ml in the last 3000 miles where before it wouldn't use any oil between services.....

The sensor can be replaced by an Audi specialist for half the price Audi will offer. I had mine done earlier this year.

This could be interesting. I'm still keeping an eye on mine. Currently done over 700 miles and MMI showing half a litre used but could do with getting a dip stick.

Annoyingly just bought 8L of Castrol Edge 5w30 as it was going cheap on Amazon.

Will try a different oil come next service I think to see if it's any better.

    @rum4mo

So i followed your guidenace to try and get an accurate reading. I drove the car for 48 miles. I got home parked it in the drive left if for 20 mins. I then went out and put the key in an waited a further 15 minutes. I checked the oil level and it is down by 40%. So i am guessing that is the correct reading. Had to delay the car going in. All booked for Thursday morning at 8am.

    cheers

I've used a tank of petrol and today had to do a round trip to Portsmouth. I'm so paranoid I keep checking the oil, but no movement yet. It's going to be doing 520 miles this weekend, so let's see how we get on. Although I'm not pushing the car above 3000rpm, there's definitely a difference in performance and consumption.

Just buy a dipstick, check it frequently and enjoy!
