Ok guys this is really worrying me. I have an intermittent rattle whenever the car is idling, when i am sitting in the car i can feel it shudder through the car. Does not happen when im driving, only when the car is idling.

Car is an 08 2.0TDi 143. Car is driving totally fine, no power issues etc.

Does seem quite loud to me, no experience with Audi as this is my first one but im sure its definitely not normal for it to do that.

Can someone please put my mind at ease, hope it is nothing expensive going wrong. :(

What is the cause of it?

Actually embarrassed to keep my car running in the carpark now as mates have noticed the rattle.

Yup. I think it could be early issues with the b8 or poor build quality. I have 2 big rattles inside the car. Quite embarrassing!

This rattle is coming from engine bay.

What rattles inside your car?

Poor build quality? Surely not from a premium brand?

You'd think! My dash rattles, I've got cardboard between plastic panels to try and stop it, my centre console rattles, I nudge it with my knee to try and stop it. My door rattles...not sure what that is, apart from that it's a nice looking car!

So you're telling me you also have this rattle coming from the engine bay? Sounds a bit like a pulley.

Rattles for about 8secs then stops few secs then rattles again

I would get your mechanic to have a listen Aaron just to be on the safe side!

i will be doing that Shaun, I would rather take it to a VAG specialist, but dont really know of any here.

Mines a 2.0 b8 sline 2008, I did have a rattle a few months back when on tick over, I only noticed it one day when i got out of the car on my drive with engine still running ,lifted the bonnet and felt around the engine bay, turned out to be the air filter box not put back and located properly, I guess at previous service. it rattled like hell!! sounded horrible but stopped when I revved up!

Apart from that I have had no issues with mine, personally think the build quality is all you would expect on these cars! no rattles or squeeks in the car at all, lovely and smooth!

I can't see this being much of an issue, anything serious and it would rattle all the time, get it up on a ramp with the bottom engine cover off, get your mechanic to check, there are a few heat shields and internal panels about that can catch etc , it doesn't take much.

Has anyone else not experienced this?

Was worried it could be the flywheel but would it not be rattling continuously?

Theres no rattling when driving, car drives completely normal

get it checked, maybe somthing like flywheel:keule:

Ok so very strange. Its stopped doing it.

I went to a cruise carpark tonight with mates, about 30 miles from my town. We kinda raced on the way there, coughtripplefigurescough... :whistle2: got to the carpark and had my car off for a while when pulled up beside mates. Was freezing cold so started up the car and let it run for 5mins to get some heat.

Switched the heater off and kept the car running for a further 5mins, nothing, no judders/rattles or anything.

Listened all night for it, and it never did it once.

Could me, giving it a good 'cutting' up the motorway, helped this?

It could of,you'll have to wait and see if it happens again, sometimes you just gotta wait for things get a little worse to see what/where they are..........like mine i get a rumbbling noise, very slight vibration through the passenger side and drivers side floors, the rummbling noise(like a bad wheel bearing) is noticeable at 15mph,louder at 24mph,then after 35mph,nothing there! its not the tyres and my mechanic said i cant spin the wheels that fast so wait till it gets worse........just live with it mate, hope it dont come back.

I have the same problem. If you're worried that its the flywheel try pressing your clutch in. The rattle is sometimes not there for days on end but it WILL come back. Ive been having the exact same sound. Ive got a video which clearly shows the rattle (I will try finding it). I'm going to try a fix soon as I've narrowed it down to the airbox, try pulling the airbox towards you when it's idling and the noise show stop. It's very annoying!

Don't worry it does my head in also. But the best way to do this isn't the internet. You have to get outside and just have a fiddle.

**** my life!! its back again!!

I think it only does it when the engine is cold and the car has been sitting turned off for a while.

Drove home from town and sat with the car ticking over for a couple of mins on my drive and it didnt do it
