Just bought a used A4 from an independent used car dealer.....HELP please!

    Hi all,
I’m new to the Audi brand having previously owned many variants in VW’s, BMW’s, Merc’s and Lexus’s and so far in the 6 days of ownership am very happy with the build quality\ride and handling. I bought the A4 B8 2009 2.0 S Line in Ibis white, full leathers and SatNav (also has bluetooth, cruise, rear LED’s all of which I don’t know are additional extras or standard)
My questions relate to the selling\buying of this particular vehicle and would greatly appreciate any advice from all you knowledgeable people.

When buying the car I was told that it had a full service history albeit not from Audi. The initial stamp in my duplicate service book was from a ‘German car specialist’ (the stamp does not show the address or phone number to verify) this was a Longlife service. The second service was performed by Audi at 40000 miles (car is now at 40300ish) also a Longlife service The garage that I bought the car from had it serviced from them. Would the car not have been due a major service at this point? It seems as though a very basic service has been done in order to get the book stamped to make it look like the service aligns up to the recommended Audi schedule, this has left me thinking what else would normally have been changed on a car that has covered 40000? Filters\fluids\spark plugs\gearbox oil etc? Could I ask that they get the service performed in line with Audi’s recommended service schedule?

The car has had 2 MOT’s the very first MOT the car had ever had which is still valid for a few weeks had 2 advisory notices, both front tyres and a serious leak from one of the rear shock absorbers. I can see that the 2 front tyres have been changed but interestingly was told on the sly by Audi that during the service that the shock absorber had a minor leak. I’m guessing that if the shock absorber has never been replaced the major leak would end up being a minor leak as there would be very minimal fluid to leak out? Is this something that I could get them to replace? The garage also had the car MOT’d which is why in theory I have 2 valid MOT’s (whether having a more recent one invalidates a previous one I don’t know) I don’t have that certificate to hand as the garage sent it off for my number plate transfer onto the car with the V5c so don’t know if it’s again had a advisory notice against it.

Audi also mentioned that the brake disc’s are ‘lipped’ and would require all the pads and disc’s changed (not sure how soon). I’m not sure if this is acceptable and if I can request that the garage change them all?
I also paid with half with debit card and half on credit card to help protect me under section 75.

Apologies for the epic post but would love to hear your thoughts.

I absolutely intend to try but don't want to approach them without backing up each 'fix' with a valid reason.

If for example I asked them to replace all the pads and discs would I have a leg to stand on or would they just fob me off with a "Audi always say stuff like that to make you part with your cash" which I could counter with "by law the vehicle is not fit for purpose" or you were aware of this issue as Audi advised you that these would need doing"? I maybe on the wrong track and may not be able to do anything about it but would like to have all the ammunition if they kick up a fuss....

If the shock is leaky and needs replacing within 6 months of buying the car it should be covered under sale of goods act.
Mot advisery is at testers discretion, regarding the brakes, if they are low you could ask they change them but highly doubt you will get anywhere.

Service history... not sure, try to get the proper service covered.

lipped brake disks aren't an mot failure niether are pads unless the brakes dont work correctly or they are below minimum spec ,as shocker is an advisory ,if it passes the mot then you'll probably not get any joy with that either .

Thanks for the advice, looks like I might try and get the shock absorber issue resolved but just on the off chance I might try and get the other stuff resolved with a good possibility that they won't consider resolving them as they are not obliged to do so....

I would still like to know about the 40000 mile service if anyone can help? My duplicate book doesn't tell me what type of service is required\the intervals or what gets replaced as part of the service.
I need to know a list of items that get replaced during a typical 40000 mile service....if anyone can help?

Can a dealer also tell me what specification the car left the factory with?

    google for service intervals

and call any audi dealer give them your reg ask where it was sold from
then call that dealer and ask them what services it has had in the past they keep anything thats ever been done at audi

only reason i say this is cos you have a duplicate book

theres a sticker in the boot normaly in the spare wheel well
with loads of codes on it

theres a decoder you can put all the codes in and it tells you what it was made with

I didn't push for the garage to change the pads or discs but have asked them to replace all the filters and change the brake and gearbox oil as well as the leaking shock absorber and throttle valve. They agreed for me to obtain a quote from my local garage as it would be a big inconvenience (being self employed and the car being used primarily by my wife to do the nursery runs) for me to drive the car 60 miles to them, so will find out how they would like to proceed today hopefully.

Whilst my car was at my local garage I asked them to check the paint work, not that I noticed anything untoward more just to check that it matched up to the description that the garage gave me ("for the age and mileage it may have a few stone ships in the bonnet but nothing else")
I've been told that apart from the roof and bootlid the car has had a lot of spray work done to it and filler on both sides of the car! The quality of the spray work is so poor that the smooth edges of 2 of the wheel arches are not so smooth, there is orange peel, drip marks and over spray onto the chrome trim! The front wing also hasn't been fitted back on properly!?!?
Anyway I rang the garage and told them about this discovery and how unhappy I was about it, looks like they want to get the car back as they didn't notice the paint work issues? Now that the paint work has been pointed out to me it is so obvious how bad the work is, I will be looking at getting them to respray the car back up to a reasonable standard for the age and mileage.

I had a good look around it had a steering wheel, 4 wheels and the documentation matched up but that's about the limit with inspecting a car, the drip marks and orange peel which were being pointed out right in front of me were still not noticeable to me however with the wheel arches when I now run my finger along its very smooth until I get to the area where the damage has been poorly repaired....

I bought from a car dealer in the hope of avoiding this very situation but knowing that I would have some law behind me which also explains why part of the purchase was also put on a credit card.....

i'd think a respray should be the least of your concerns - i'd be more interested in finding out what all that damage was. can't prove they knew the car had been in an accident of course but if the repairs have been carried out to the same quuality of the paintwork it might be a cause for worry.

Audi told me everything about my convertible including the full black leather interior it no longer has. (The guy who sold it to me said it was stripped out)
