After owning a string of extremely reliable Hondas, I'm looking at a late 2009 (59) Avant SE with the 143 diesel and the multitronic box. The car has 62k miles and has Audi history up to the last service at 59k. The docs state SE, but it seems to have full leather, nav, and larger, almost S Line like wheels, which is a bit strange...

Obviously, it is out of warranty.

How likely is this to be an expensive liability, given:

- The bad history of the mtronic box I have read so much about.
- Cam belt problems, given the fact I don't think it's had a change. (Confusion reigns as to wether its supposed to be 75k, 115k or 5 years)

I'd rather not have to spend another 500+ on a cam belt change.

What is the mtronic like to drive? I read the highest of praise and then the largest insults.

At the moment, I drive a iShift Honda Civic, with is a single clutch auto. It is known for its hesitation, due to the lack of dual clutch. I actually find it ok most of the time, but something a bit smoother would be nice.

Is it a 6 or 7 speed? Get a 7 speed if you can and one with cambelt water pump etc done.

I assume with it being multitronic it is cvt...so no 'speeds' other than the faked ratios.

Or have I got this wrong, and the multitronic is actually a real auto box?

Are you saying that the pump and cambelt are necessary at this mileage then?

Thanks for the PDF, looks interesting.

Apparently, the car I'm looking at is an 8 speed.

Anyone with any experiences of this box, and its reliability/drivability?

Everyone I've discussed the multi with have said its not a wise choice, hence my search for my next car has got a higher price tag now, which is why I am staying out atm lol.

I've chatted with audi mastertech, audi salesman, a tuner & all have said steer clear, was also advised when you put anymore power through them, remap etc, they fall apart.

I won't be doing any remapping.

Do your comments also apply to the revised B8 version? Most of the complaints I've read seem to apply to the old A4 multitronic...

As in the stronic, well that seems to the better one yes, one I will get.
