Hi all, I'm just about to move over from B7 to B8, and looking at a A4 B8 2.0Tfsi 09 plate with 33k on the clock, i'm close to purchase (today), should I give this a miss, the B7 Tdi 170 cost a small fortune in fixes, am I now looking at the same with this B8.

I am also looking at my first purchase of a B8 2.0 TFSI 211bhp, is this a common thing with oil problems on this model?
I've driven a Suzuki and a Mercedes and never had to add engine oil to it regularly.

If this is the case, I will need to reconsider.

I think the problem is with the 08-09 models. I believe that the problem was sorted with the '10 models. Somebody else might be able to confirm this for me. I don't know if all cars are effected by this problem, but don't let it put you off as it's a cracking engine and I'm getting around the same mpg as the TDi version.

Thanks, can someone confirm this as I thought I read somewhere it affected models between 09-11 however I could of misread it.....

Reading through this entire thread it appears 3 people mention the years:

    Engine rebuild required on a B8 @68k
    Engine rebuild required on a B8 @68k
    Engine rebuild required on a B8 @68k

I know it's a cracking model and high spec but if this leads to issues like this I would lose the will to live!

Well off the top of my head (it's been 6 months since I drove it as I'm working abroad) I was getting up to 42mpg on Long journeys, mainly motorway and around 35mpg combined.

I know for sure Apparently this was ironed out by 2012. The early models seem too suffer the most. If your buying a car from a dealer you should be covered for this repair if required. Full Audi history is essential it seems for audi to consider contributions.

If I was you check the oil on the cars mmi screen found in the car section of the menu. If it's low it possibly has the issue if it's full it's either ok or been topped off.

If your buying from a private seller, be sure to ask if
    1. car has had any oil consumption problems and if it has went into service centre for a consumption test and if failed then stage 1 and then 2 repair.
    2. Proof, invoice of repair
If buying through dealership, not sure about warranty in U.K, ask dealer if car has had any oil problems fixed, again ask for proof of repair. Quickly after purchase monitor oil use, if you believe the car is consuming more then 0.5litre per 1000km (620miles), go in for consumption test.

The car is a very nice car to drive otherwise, just wished it was not up to customer to find and chase around having this fault fixed, as it is potentially very expensive to repair, annoying topping a car with a litre of oil for a premium brand car. Plus the fault came out of Audi factory. But once fixed..very satisfying!

Evening all, just thought I would swing by and update you on my car! To recap, I have the 2009 Audi A4 2.0T FSi 211bhp Sline Avant and I've had 'the fix' now. Picked it up 2nd January from Audi and lucky for me I've had a high mileage month.

I was told to run it in for so many miles, so take it easy driving it, which I have been.

Anyway 1st weekend in Jan I had to do 250miles, on the motorway I checked the oil on the MMI and saw 1/2 litre had been used, heart sank so on the Monday rang Audi uk and spoke to a dead nice guy. He said that I have to run it in for '3000' miles (wow), in that 3000 miles, I will notice the oil usage get less and less and do you know what.... He was right! The oil usage has slowed right down. I have now done 1200miles since the 2nd Jan and still have 1/4 litre of oil left. I now average 30-36mpg urban and 42-44mpg motorway. So it is getting better.

I am so glad I got Audi to fix it and I bought a car with a full Audi service history, they have been great, it isn't right all the stress but it has paid off! The car is a great car to drive!

This forum is a great help and if anyone is in the pickle that I was then be persistent and get the repair done by Audi but push them for the goodwill repair and read up on the fault, without that knowledge I may not have got the goodwill. I wouldn't get it fixed anywhere else as the Audi guarantee to me is worth the car itself.

Glad to hear you got it sorted mate. Have you noticed if the pick up is alot better since the ecu update as well? I certainly did. It's like a totally different car! And I Love the beefier noise it makes as well!

Yeah I am well happy! Cheers! I can actually enjoy the car again! Roll on the nice weather!

To be honest I'm not 100% about it sounding beefier! apparently when I had the oil consumption test stage 1 I was told I had the latest software already so can't be certain but it does feel like it has a lot of pull in it! I'm just been dead careful to keep it under 3000rpm which is killing me. (Sad I know!). It has always had a nice spluttery growl in idle, I'm gonna get some new chrome tips put on soon enough!

Audi rang me the other day offering me a health check, wheel alignment and valet and MOT voucher all for £49.00. Can't decide whether to take them up on it, seems good enough! I've had 3 health checks on it though in the last 4 months, this car has better health care than me! ;o)

I'm the same. I haven't really been able to test it much as I'm also trying to keep the revs down. But the couple of times that I have let the revs rise, it's definitely alot better sounding. I have a K&N Filter fitted so don't know if that helps. I would take Audi up on the offer as MOTs at Audi are £49.99 normally anyway. They didn't offer me but I get everything done by Audi anyway.

I'll look into the K&N filter, wouldn't mind a bit more umph in the sound! Fit it yourself or with Audi?

Fitted it myself mate. Took a few seconds. It's just a panel filter as they don't make a Induction kit.

Well I am 1400 miles in now and so far used almost no oil, still between full and 1 notch off full. Fuel consumption still appalling but can't fix it so leaving it. From what I have heard it is about right for the Quattro with multitronic, as a lot heavier than the s-tronic...

Hi guys. I am having a weird symptom with my A4 B8 tdi 170hp. The oi level at the MMI is at half of the scale. My car has 74000kms and the next service is at 85000kms. Meanwhile the level variates, sometimes it. is a little higher than the middle, and other times it is at half.... Is this normal guys?? Help me out here please. I am concerned about this what a hell is going on with my car?

Quite normal for the mmi level to go up and down. Use it as a guide only. If the car needs oil you will get another warning! It will ask to be topped off with one liter which is what the mmi graph represents (similar to what a dip stick measures). Mine is currently showing between half and two thirds on the graph. It goes up and down all the time. Longer journeys seem to help settle the oil.

My mmi still shows full after 8,000 miles ... I was expecting to have topped it up a bit but im happy to wait for the low oil warning to come on as a last resort

Apologies for the hijack, but I bought my 2011 car a couple of months ago and so far have put on about 2800miles in that time. I have topped up around 2.5ltrs of oil so far which seems excessive! Car is going in for an oil consumption test this week but what should I be pushing for as an outcome? Fuel consumption also seems to be nothing like what is quoted elsewhere in this thread, I struggle to hit 30mpg to be honest and that is trying hard?!

Think I might be having the same issues. However I purchased my a4 tsi quattro from a non audi dealer in December. Previously car had a full audi dealer service history the last in Nov 2012.

I checked the service history with audi and they said that the 'Oil Sump separator' had been replaced, what ever this is. My car is a 2010 with 88k on the clock. I know it is high but I do very few miles and intend on keeping. Would the fact that the mileage being high the oil issues would have been obvious and sorted?

If not where would I stand with audi as I had the car remapped at revo in the new year?

Having read all the horror stories I am getting a bit paranoid and always checking the mmi and have added about half a litre in 2000miles. Is this a reasonable amount to have added?

Also due to the remap I have been advised to change the oil, going to replace with millers cf 5w40 nt.

As for mpg mine is a quattro and I can get 35mpg on a long run.

By the way the remap is awesome!

Yours seems to be in the margins for the unfortunate piston issue. Audi will do the consumption test then decide after you have driven a set mileage a course of action. Do you have a warranty? You can try to get audi to pay for the repair but some situations mean they won't cover all the costs. Full audi history will be in your favour.

Half a litre in 2k is above audi's threshold so I wouldn't bother. Most cases people were consuming over a litre in less than a 1000 miles some less than 500. I doubt your remap will help should you push audi to pay if the outcome was new pistons. Even though the issue is known to them as a fault I struggled to get 2/3 covered by them with no remap and full audi history at 68k. I'm sure they would use it as and excuse even though the underlying fault is nothing to do with a remap.

    All the best.

Good man! I would like one but while the warranty on my repair is valid I am reluctant to have it. Just over a year to go. Maybe time for a change then? Problem is for my needs not much else takes my fancy. This a4 is the only car I haven't got bored of.

I do have a warranty, a couple of months left of the manufacturers warranty and the remaining 10 months or so of the Audi Approved warranty, along with a full main dealer history so hopefully should be covered.

Audi quoted a figure along the lines of 0.7ltr oil per 1000km as being acceptable, but that is just a huge amount in my eyes. At the moment I am roughly topping up a litre of oil every 3 fill ups.

Is the problem usually made worse with short/local trips?

Well I have returned the car to Audi this morning after completing the 1000km oil consumption trial. The oil level has dropped on the computer from full to just below 1/4 I would estimate in the 600miles. Just have to wait and see what Audi say now. At this rate I will have totally changed the cars oil in between oil services in top ups which surely cannot be right!

Thanks for all the updates A4B8Sline really useful. Purchased A4 b8 quattro petrol 2 months ago from Renault. On stage 2 going back to Audi tomorrow 1L of oil used in 400miles, even with pcv valve changed lol. I know your water pump was changed, my one has a leak so will need replacing too. Prob just gasket issue. Good to know the piston change solved your problems. Awaiting the costs and who will contribute for what 60,000 miles 2009.

I am also about to join the club after visiting my local Audi dealer today who has recommended the diagnostic check, but ultimately it sounds as if it is a mechanical problem. I was advised someone else brought their car in for the same repair a few days ago and the overall job was £4,500 where Audi contributed £2,000!!! I'll be ****ed if I am paying that sort of money for the repair, particularly after spending £1,000 last year (the rest paid for by Audi) for another major engine malfunction.

I have just started drafting my letter to Audi UK...This has really compromised my decision on buying another Audi, hence my thread 3.0 TDI S-Line A6 or Jeep Grand Cherokee

Like has been said before, Audi UK will tell you it is not up to them about how much you get offered for the contribution, it's up to the dealer. This varies widely between dealers and it dependant on wether or not you car has full Audi service history. Some people on here got ALL the repairs done for free (even out of warranty). I ended up paying £270 and the dealer paid the rest. It varies massively between dealers. The annoying thing is Audi UK admit that the engine has a manufacturing default but won't do anything about it as opposed to Audi US who fix all cars with this problem for free out of warranty!

Been keeping an eye on my level, using 1ltr every 200-250 miles, town driving. (shocking) 59 plate at 70k. FASH, 1 previous owner
Going to take out warranty at £500-£600 then go to Audi and address the issue, I'm taking out warranty as I don't want Audi to turn round and say I have to pay x amount.
Or should I go Audi without the extra warranty and hope they sort it for free instead of me paying extra for warranty and the sort it for free?
    What would you do?

Sorry to hear of your issues. I'm glad the updates have been useful and hopefully put your mind at ease if your worried about the outcome from the repair. How did you get on with stage two?

Again sorry to hear your in the 'club',

Audi are certainly aware of the issue but it's still a monopoly with the outcome if they will pay including dealer contributions. Your extended warranty would probably cost you 500-600 at least plus you will have to wait a few months before claiming otherwise they might investigate the claim.
