    excessive oil consumtion? Or is it?

    My 10000 mile 2.0 TFSi seems to have a thirst for its high quality fully synthetic oil. I seem to be topping up 1 litre per every month and a half. Is this normal? There are no leaks and there is no burning of oil as far as we can ascertain. Exhaust seems fine i.e. no blueish smoke etc.

    Well after popping into Highland Audi to see about mu HUGH oil consumption, it turns out that Audi are aware of a problem with the engine and they recommend that there is crankshaft seals & sensors that can be changed and a software update to resolve the problem. There has been no recall for this therefore it would be up to the owner to pay the £260 to have it done.

    Need help guys regarding oil consumption

    Seems they have the same problem in America but Audi do the repair FOC
    On order: A4 Avant 2.0 TDi Quattro 177 Black Edition Daytona Grey

    I tried Audi Customer Services as well but it looks like owners have to pay for the modification

    Same with mine, i shouldn't really worry, im up to 14000 and it is using less now, it does say somewhere in the handbook that the 2.0 Tfsi uses more oil than usual.

    Well I have had the crankshaft seals replaced and had a software update and it seems (so far!) to have fixed the problem of excessive oil consumption. Audi know about these faults and have put out recommendations for the 2.0TFSI engines.

    A Software update and a Revo Remap doesn't mix :L mines fine anyway.

    Mine uses quite a bit but again mine is remapped so the software update may wipe that. Audi should be recalling all cars and paying for the fix be wise it is clearly a fault with the car.

    Maybe if we contact Audi UK direct and see what they say? Why should the US market get it for free and not us?

    I spoke to Audi UK but they stated that only issues affecting vehicle safety are given re-calls hence there isn't one for the Excessive Oil problems. They have got a warning marker on the Audi system for it, but will not inform customers until a problem is reported to them.

    Update.

    Audi have stated:

    'Our technical team have advised that weare unaware of any known issues in regards to oil consumption for your model;however they have advised that the maximum tolerances are ½ litre every 1,000km (620 miles approx).'

    Hmm. Unifnormed ir really theres not actually an issue. 1/2l per 620 miles seems a bit excessive to me.

    Answers on a postcard please.

    How can they possibly think using half a litre of oil every 620 miles is acceptable? Sounds like they make the tolerances up to suit themselves.

    Maybe a recall isn't required but them to pay for the fix is imo.

    There was a similair thing when I owned my Leon FR Tdi witht the injectors. They were failing on a lot of cars (not mine) and it was a known problem by Seat but owners were still having to pay for new injectors to be fitted, it was over £2000 for all four and the loom. Long story short complaints were lodged by owners to Seat UK and also VOSA and a recall was eventually done but it did take a long time, well over a year if i remember correctly. That was a safety issue though because cars were just cutting out suddenly without any warning so something like this may be a bit more difficult to turn into a recall. I really don't fancy paying for it though.

    I've not told my dealer about it yet. Do you think I should go to them first or just go right onto Audi UK? My car goes in on the 20th to get new wings (corrosion) so I'll probably speak to them then about it.

    Audizine.com has extensive coverage on this issue in the States. Audi replace pistons & rings on my 2009 with 45,000 miles on the motor.

BMW said they didnt know of any issue yet when they called the part up on their pc they were out of stock and hundreds had been ordered in the past hence they must have been replacing something for some reason!!!!!!!!     I know what you mean about dealers denying they know theres a problem. I had massive issues with BMW when my ecu went bang on my E90 3 Series. They wanted £1500 for a new one and I argued the case and they eventually admitted it was a common fault and paid the repair costs. It still put me off BMW.
    I initially found out from my local dealer that there was a known issue with the oil consumption on the 2.0TFSI. When I spoke to Audi UK they didnt admit it initially but in the end they did but stated it wasn't part of a re-call as it wasn't a safety issue.

    Well it looks like the last work on my car to try and fix this problem didn't work. Just done 350 miles and its used 2 litres of oil!!!!! It's beyond a joke now. I put in more oil than petrol! No oil leaks so don't know what's going on! Out if interest, did you ever get a reply from Audi Kev?

    Mine is in at the moment getting new wings and after that is done the first phase of the oil consumption test will be carried out. I was told that if they think that it is excessive then it will require new pistons and rings. No mention of oil seals or anything else. Something else that wasn't mentioned was who would pay for these new pistons and rings!

    I've already had the crank shaft seals and sensors replaced as well as a software update as that's the first fix Audi do for excessive oil consumption and then you have to monitor it for 1000km. I really hope it's not pistons etc that need replaced next as that sounds bloody expensive! I got the first work done by Audi as a good will gesture but I had to pay the £230 labour charge. They need my car for 4 days to carry out the work and for testing. Incidentally I had to contact Audi UK and argue the case for the good will gesture. It baffles me that Audi know about this problem and Audi America fix it for free but Audi UK don't do it as a matter of course.

    I don't know if I trust that MMI oil level actually. I don't know if its even possible to do it manually?

    Still not got my car back again but pick it up on Monday, that'll be 2 and a half weeks they've had it!!! From there we'll see how much oil it uses in the 1000km, enough for them to sort it hopefully. I only hope they've done a good job on the wings.

    I called Audi in Milton Keynes as my MMI said it was full 800 miles later empty... They told me that for my 2.0T 211bhp it is normal to burn that much oil Crazy me thinks. They told me to buy a litre put half in and wait for the level to drop again before adding the other half.

    It's only normal because there is a problem that most of them seem to suffer from. The sooner they accept responsibility for the problem and cough up for the necessary repairs the better. You could ask for an oil consumption test to be done?

There's a modification to the inlet system that is part of the Forge dv which would need to be removed because I was told that part gets replaced as part of the first phase. Also the software update could wipe my remap so I told them not to go ahead with it for the time being, I don't want to risk loosing my current software until I find out if it can be uploaded again without having to pay again.ScottishS3 - how's is yours getting on since the first phase was carried out?
