Smile Oil light on 3000 miles after service!

    Hi all,

This is my first post and unfortunately it's a bit of a moaning one.

I purchased my Audi 08 2.0 TFSI convertible from 'the car people' in June of last year. It had 55,000 miles on the clock and I've had trouble free motoring ever since. The service light came on a couple of months ago so I needed to book it in somewhere. A friend recommended a local garage who specialises in VW.Audi.SEAT and are also a member of the good garage scheme.

The car had 64,000 miles on the clock when it was serviced in February of this year, and the oil light has never been on before during the 9000 miles I had done so far. It had the MOT carried out at the same time and the garage carried out a Long Life major service on the car which included amongst other consumables an oil change; I have checked the invoice and this shows long life oil at a cost of £28.80 +VAT.

The Min oil light came on last Friday after doing a total of 3000 miles of easy driving since the service, and this has been confirmed via a physical check, so I contacted the garage this morning. I told them the light has come on so maybe it was an oversight and they had forgot to carry this out. The mechanic said that this couldn't possibly be the case and it must have just been used up. I said that there are no visible oil leaks from the car and that it isn't smoking at all, and that if it was burning that much oil then surely it would have failed during exhaust emissions during the MOT. He went on to say that it would have to be burning an awful lot of oil to show up during the MOT, and also said that Audi's can use 1 litre of oil per 600 miles?

I drive my car like a saint and regularly achieve 40+ mpg on my 30 mile motorway trip to work everyday so do not believe I would use this much oil?

He said that if I could pop the car in then they would put another litre of oil in but it definitely has been carried out so there must be another reason. I've said I'll top it up and have a look again in 3000 mile-ish and then report back to the garage.

Does anyone else think I've been ripped off, but surely if you were going to do this you would choose something different to the oil as this will show up via a warning light as it has?

Look forward to hearing from anyone.

probably as over sight by the mechanic doing the service tbh.
after changing the oil filter and dropping the oil out.... you refit the sump plug and fill with oil. but not the full amount because you need start it to fill the oil filter housing. then after running it and letting it settle you recheck the level to top it up to max/near max on the dip stick. im betting the mech. has forgot this last bit.

only thing to do is top it up and see. if theyre giving you a free top up then thats good!

on a side note £28 for longlife oil........ thats cheap, too cheap infact.

Yes best thing to do would be refil and wait to see how long it's takes this time. That may have read the level wrong who knows.

I found when I got my car back from it's first service the oil level was at minimum. At over £20/litre an expensive oversight.

There is no rule on filling an engine to the max level after a service. So long as it is betwween the marks when the engine is at running temperature - all is well.

My 2.0tfsi gets through 1L of oil every 4000 miles. Mainly motorway miles. They do burn there oil seems to be common on them. Like you my engine with 60k looks as new with no leaks no blue smoke and no burning smell.

Not entirely the case IMHO. If the service schedule says 6.9 litres is required and 6.9 litres is invoiced, I expect to get 6.9 litres.

    I disagree.

As I said, if the service schedule says that to refill after draining it will require 6.9 litres and 6.9 litres is invoiced that's what should be provided. Regardless of how you extract the oil.

As it happens when I questioned it with them they divulged that 3 of the 4 auto dispensing systems was known to under dispense.

Thanks for the replies. I'll wait to see how long the top up I've given it lasts!
