I just wanted to know what peoples opinion concerning the two engines.
I had my B7 S-line cab 1.8T since November. When I first drove is I thought it went some (having come from a 1.6 99' A3 with REALLY HEAVY 18" Nuvalari reps it was like a F1 car!). Now I'm not so sure that its that quick.
When at the lights and I give it some right foot, there is a period where it does nothing, then the power comes. I now the Cab is a heavy car but I always get beaten by some looser in a Punto for the first few yards!
What I want to know is like for like is the 2.0T that much faster?
Lets say both 1.8t and 2.0t were at the lights how much quicker is the 2.0t? Would it be off in the distance?
Thanks.

The 2.0 would be quicker, and better MPG etc, i had the 1.8T in my A3, and that was rapid enough! Though i had turbo lag also from a standstill - But once on the move, rapid...

You could re-map it and that could solve the turbo lag?!
I really miss my 1.8T though, that whistle from the turbo, and then the whooooore type noise from the waste gate

I've just bought a 1.8T S-Line cab myself. I had the same engines in an A3 and a Leon Cupra and quite liked it. I took it over a 2.0T unlimately because it was the spec I wanted. I know that it's not going to be the fastester of cars, but I've decided that if it annoys me I'll get a remap. A stage one 1.8t should have more bhp than a standard 2.0t but how they compare in reality is another thing.

I tried both before buying the 20TFSI and there is quite a difference but on the avant that i tried them. i think main reason is that becuase the cab is heavy any increase in power of the engine would help.
Offcourse i would agree with the rest if you remap the 18t and put good fuel in you should be fine.

I've remapped the 20t and its awesome to say the least......

Hope this helps
Also you can easily walk up to a delear thats got a 20t and do a test drive and you'll see for yourself the difference

Cheers
Dorosth

Thanks for your feedback guys much appreciated.
The 1.8T does go after a while, and especially if your are already moving. Its just when you are standing still and you put your foot down it launches but then kind of lags until you get to 3rd... But I have never driven a turbo car before this so it probably my driving style not giving it enough revs to get the turbo kicking in earlier.
But I do love the turbo whistle:yes:!! Looks like I will be getting a remap done!!!

Well having driven an S3 225 1.8t and having a remapped 2.0T i would say power delivery is roughly the same although my 2.0T was quite abit quicker.
The good thing about the 1.8t is that its cheaper to tune and they all have forged pistons as standard! You could get a KO4 turbo and a remap and see 250bhp and more for not alot more money!
As all us 2.0T owners know, our next step after a remap is f*cking expensive!

Thanks T.T.
Im doing my research for the remap. By the way do you have to declare a remap to your insurance? And does it greatly affect the premiums?

I dove both the 1.8T and the 2.0T before ordering my 2.0Tfsi Cabriolet (S-Line Special Edition) new in 2008. There was, in my opinion, a big difference in the two. If you want the 1.8T to get anywhere near the 2.0T, you will definitely need a remap.

If you have a remap done, then you will have to tell your insurance company, otherwise they will claim it is invalid (assuming they can tell). Personally I would never take the risk...always declared the upgraded wheels and Milltek exhaust (exhaust now for sale in the classifieds and ebay by the way!!) on my car. I don't think it will make too much difference to your premium...the problem is a lot of the normal insurers (direct line, swiftcover, LV and others) will not quote you if the car is modified in any way...you need to go to some of the more specialised companies - I've heard Adrian Flux is good....although I use Aviva myself.

exactly the post i need, deciding between the 1.8 or 2.0 myself. Just curious about comment Torque said "As all us 2.0T owners know, our next step after a remap is f*cking expensive!"

as its looking expensive enough to get the car so was what upgrades are after a remap

is the 2.0 the same engine as the 1.8 just a bigger bore and evry thing else or a different engine
also heard Adrian Flux is good around £700 for an 04 A4 v6 droptop for me

Upgrades after a remap, apart from exhaust etc are:
Uprated fuel pump £700 as they are mechanical and not electronic, running off the exhaust cam i believe
Bigger injecters from an S3, Expensive!
The KO4 Turbo from the S3, Expensive!
Front mount intercooler kit.
Another remap to get all this to work together plus you'll need to uprate the clutch, brakes etc

You can buy the KO4 turbo upgrade kit from companies like backdraft motorsport and fit it yourself but this still cost 3K+ You do get 350bhp though which is more than enough!

The 1.8t is a different engine altogether. It has 20 valves, the 2.0T has 16 valves. Also you can obtain huge power from the 1.8t as its been around abit longer and they have forged pistons as standard allowing more options for tuning before having to do things like pull the egine apart to upgrade.

The 2.0T FSI is a more modern engine which boasts good fuel economy and technology derived from Audi's development in Le Man 24hr...God i'm abit geeky arent i! Lol

Although i might add that i never saw the good fuel economy!......Full throttle or not at all lol

thanks for the possible upgrades :)
All I readed was expensive expensive expensive :(

But as im still to win the lotto the 1.8t is looking like the better option id be happy with getting it to around the 220/250 BHP mark and it seems like this will easily done at not to much expense or major work and should still be very reliable, running costs would be moderate maybe, well spose ya cant always have evry thing.

now do i want a lazy car Auto or the interaction of the manual why are there so many options to pick,

might be a bit of a stoopid question but hey im learning and need to make a good desicion, I have seen lots of A4's on autotrader but most dont mention if they are Quattro or not apart from contacting the seller is there an easy way to find out if the car is a quatro as i defo want that, basicaly are all S Lines going to be a quatro ?

thanks in advance for the help

TorqueTerrorist nothing wrong with being a g33k lol, its helping me make my mind up and maybe it will help some one in a similar situation aswell

as iv not had my own car for 12 years and never an Audi let alone a car that cost over 200 god bless the days of having a propper mini

Dont get me wrong Im was more than happy with the 1.8t, the engine does have power however the lag is the thing that will bother you the most.
You will put you foot down at the lights and it will launch but then do very little until the revs kick in, in second and third, but then it starts flying!!
Im sure my planned re map will pay dividends!!
Obviously if you chose the auto it would compensate for this because you will have a smoother more constant delivery of power.

In answer to your question: no not all S-lines are quattro, you may be getting mixes up with 'S' e.g S4 & RS4, they are all quattro as standard.
S-lines are more of a package of upgrades e.g. you get leather sport seats, lower harder suspension, perforated leather steering wheel with red stitching, special wheels with lower profile tyres, and a fancier trim in the cabin (mine has the brushed aluminium inlays... sweet!!)
I was lucky to get my B7 Cabriolet with only 15k on the clock for £14,000 with a grand part exchange for my banger of an A3!
The key thing is to be patient when looking, they are such nice cars its easy to get carried away and buy the first one you see, it took me three months to get mine.

yeah i did not think all S-Lines where quattro i was probaly hoping they where as they dont mention it being a quattroin the adverts spose its a case of ring to confirm

yeah i think its gota be the S-Line i think prob go for the 1.8t prefeer lazy auto but be happy with the manual
HOLY SH!T 14,000 with 15k oh readed it wrong so £15k in total thats realy good i was looking about that price range 14k would be better give me some money to get it chiped and stuff straight awway i was hoping to buy around winter for a cheaper price but rekon its gona be a waiting game and prob have to pay a bit more in late spring or possably go for a B6 but i realy dont like the front no offence to those that like it or have one

sits in the corner waiting n playing the waiting game BOOOO i want it now

I keep hearing people moaning about Turbo lag. Trust me its minimal on these cars. Try a Cosworth with a T4 running big power, now thats some lag!
Stop being a bunch of pussy's and launch off the lights with some revs, like 4000, hold it on the handbrake and let rip!

Oh yeah, get a manual, its a mans way!!

hehhe im itching to give it some launch :D
not having the privledge of driving a 4WD is launching one prety much just the same as a FWD ?

yeah beautiful car cant ruin it with lady controls

any one know where else is good to look for them usualy pistond n auto dont seem to have many quattros, im starting to think they are a myth :(

Its normally the 220bhp ones with the quattro isnt it? You do get abit of wheelspin in the front wheel drive. If you do get one just get the best tyres you can afford and you'll be fine. The S-line is a good handling car so once your off the line it doesnt matter its front wheel drive. The wheelspin will not even be an issue trust me, its minimal. Promise me you'll get it remapped though because its BRILLIANT!!

oh yeah its a promise ill get it remapped :) and an exhaust thats why in hoping to get one around the 14k mark so i got some spending money
also liking the idea of a RS4 rarb daytime running lights front spliter
im realy hoping for the 4WD version as i like the idea :D

The RS4 anti roll bar was on my to do list, its meant to really change the car for the better!

Let us know when you get your new car mate

hmmmm desicion making getting worse now there a nice looking 3.2 fsi (petrol) quattro on the market now any one got any advice on them
i know im asking loads of questions slightly going off topic but iv had so much helpfull advice and im so fickle n indecisive plus this is the most money iv ever spent and realy want to be as informed as i can about the loverly motor ill be getting thanks

The 2.0T has absolutely minimal turbo lag; its famous for feeling like it hasn't even got a turbo, just very smooth power increase and delivery through the rev range. I would say your wasting your time with a 3.2, they are only slightly faster, but MUCH worse on mpg, emissions, weight, etc. A remapped 2.0T will be a much better and faster car as it lighter, etc. IMO you'll need a quattro or you'll be going through front tyres a bit too often, especially when remapped. However I would say the 3.2 sounds way better than the 2.0T......

I've said this before, you've GOT to drive all the cars your thinking of buying. I tried a 2.0T quattro and a 2.0T FWD and theres a difference in how they feel. I plumped for the quattro in the end. Yes it costs me 3 mpg on every gallon but you'll soon get used to how good it is to be able to put the power down in all conditions, pulling out of a T junction sharpish in the wet will convince you of your decision. I had a 1.8T, an A4 2.0T S-line is in a different league.
