2.0 TDI oil pump / balance shaft failure?

Hi
had another call from Audi UK (Tec Guy higher up the ladder)
Good news managed to get the repair done at a greatly reduced rate, they still wont recognize any fault but if you push you can get a large chunk o goodwill,i spoke with mechanic at Audi and he told me that they had 2 more booked in for next week same problem .
Call Audi UK and ask to speak to technical support ,ask for Gary Fox (in charge of customer service)His direct line 01133932484 and stand your ground!!!!!!!!!! i hope this helps.

interesting ive just had my water pump and cam belt changed and its taking a while to start since this has been done and this morning while i was waiting for the gf i noticed it spiking on idle only 50 rpm or so but as the engine warmed up this dissaperd i wonder if this is the beginning of the problem im just on 66500 miles

It's possible, a few discussions with people that have had this issue raised the possibility of a cambelt change potentially providing a bit more pressure to the chain so could bring the problem forward. However, this is just a hypothesis.

if there is a fault and its not recognised my audi could you not speak to the office of fair trading or the the trading standards as im sure with some government wielded clout that audi would give in i know its a long shot but
its a possible one ?????

Hi,

Yes. Repair carried out by Audi. A bearing within the balancer shaft/ oil pump assembly broke up. Balancer shaft then moved on defective bearing. Drive gear teeth damaged and swarf throughout engine.

I switched off the engine as soon as low pressure light came on. Audi say its a known issue with the gear driven pumps too.

Audi is a dirty word in my house at the moment...
just happend to mine but no light came on chewed the new grears plus one of the blots that hold it together never had any stud lock on it and that was from the audi part department pump was bulit up already when we got it *******

what we can do is go to vosa as well as its a safety isuse maybe someone can draft up a form on pdf with name address contact number and explaine the fault in full then we all send it to audi vosa papers etc etc etc lets go to town on audi uk and make them sweat over my dead body will i let this go

plus they recalled stuff in the usa and fixed it asap as u know all the americans sue for millions hence the quick recall

all this talk of this is making me extremely paraniod atm im listenign to every little clink and click when my engine is running im going to have a good look round tommorow with the boroscope as im shitting it lol as its a hell of a lot of money

Well my company A4 expired 3 weeks ago with similar symptoms, 55 plate (2005) 2.0TDI Avant SE 139k miles (reading here I've done quite well), the engine sounded like those youtube links for ages.
Oddly a few hours before the big red screen of death in the dash, the glow plug warning light went on while driving for a few mins, any one else had that?

Any way driving back from a meeting, DIS flashes up Oil Pressure Low, pulled it over, killed the engine, rang the fleet manager (older company cars are "looked after" in the company workshops), "fill it up with oil, just take it easy and get it back to the yard", 400 yards up the road, no power, black smoke, expired turbo. Towed to workshops "It's the turbo, you'll have it back next week".
3 weeks and £650 on a turbo later, I stroll over to the workshops to find the car still there, but suspiciously facing the other way round, with an shiny new oil pressure testing kit sitting on the bonnet. "no oil to the turbo mate, low oil pressure, phoned Audi they say the oil pump has gone, drives fine though(!!!!)".

So god knows what'll happen to it next,I'm "enjoying" the loan of a ratty 52plate Berlingo Van (mmm nice), I only came here to make sure there's no way they can pin the blame for the oil pump on me, so I'm probably one of the few people relieved to be reading this thread.

To those doubting the A4 I do have to say now it's been pretty faultless, this is only the second time it's been towed (well 3rd but a brick on the motorway taking out all the tyres on one side hardly counts), last time was a hose off the intercooler and a faulty egr valve, and mine has probably lead a harder life than most, it's effectively a posh van, with certainly minimal servicing since the warrentty expired.

Reading here I'm glad it's not mine, I just have to twiddle my thumbs wait and see what happens, and secretly cross my fingers that someone might decide it's time for a new company car.

I am aiming to create a list of all those people that have had the fault with the details they have provided. The only issue is that this will contain people's names and those people who have received goodwill maybe less inclined to stick their head above the parapet.

A few people have gone to VOSA who have responded with "The problem is not a safety issue" i.e. they are not interested. Watchdog would only get interested if enough people pitch in and a percentage of owners with this problem probably can't be bothered to stick to their guns and kick up a fuss.

If someone wants to setup a web page about this issue then I think that would help as there is plenty of useful information spread over this several hundred page thread. I don't really have the time to do it myself so I hope there is someone here that can do it.

I'll also, at some point, and if it's any use, contact as many owners as possible who have had the dreaded problem and ask them if I can share their details.

It would be interesting to see if anyone can successfully win at Court but Audi UK possibly think that it'll never happen and they'll get this threat from owners all the time.

What i would say to those people that have the BLB engine and have not experienced the problem yet. It may be worth taking out one of those Motor Direct Warranties for about 300-350 which you can get to cover Vat registered or Franchise Garages, thankfully i told my mate to get one for his 05 tdi s line and low and behold in month 2 of having the car he had the same problems,he just left it with Audi to sort out and 4500k worth of work later he got the car back at no extra cost to him. I think the £300 may be money well spent if anyone is really worried other than moving the car on.

Err can someone confirm what the exact problem is? The latest news from the company workshop is on mine is......

"Good news we took the sump off and it's just a little plastic chain guard thats snapped off, shouldn't be expensive, you'll have it back in no time"

(I'm now dreading some sort of repair involving cable ties and gaffer tape)

The normal problem is that the plastic tensioner fails. Audi do not replace the chain, they only support moving over to the gear driven assembly. Independant garages can still buy new chains but it still has the same potential.

Been a while since I posted but it seems like there are still problems out there. Just wanted to add to Nathan's post that it is usually the plastic tensioner that fails first and then the chain starts to whip and wear the teeth of the sprocket away - at least that is what happened to mine. Fortunately, when mine failed I had a 3rd party warranty and between them and Audi they covered the £2,500+ bill. They only replaced the oil pump (with the modified part) and a new sump (to take the modified balance shaft) but at £120/hour main dealer labour vs warranty of £65 max from the warranty you are left with a hole. That was all back in Feb and my car was off the road nearly 8 weeks with them (warranty company and Audi) faffing around - only got a courtesy car for the last 3 weeks! Car is going fine now with no evidence of turbo or big end issues thank goodness - I did stop the engine as soon as the low oil pressure light came on only because I could. Not much chance if you are in the fast lane on the motorway!! The 2.0 Tdi A4 is a great car but this plus a potential Dual Mass Flywheel issue (another wonderful design lasting lees that the clutch it drives!!!!) and expensive parts make private ownership a far from cheap experience. Good luck to all you guys out there with the problem. As Nathan says, do contact Audi UK (as I did), write to them and keep badgering them for an answer. Remember all 'goodwill' is negotiable. I started with a 100% figure with them and they countered with 20%. I waited for the final quote from the Audi garage, saw what I would get from the 3rd Party warranty company and said I would settle for the difference - net zero for me - and it worked.
Regards
Al

Just joined this forum as my 2005 A5 S-Line is in the garage as we speak and i wanted to find out a bit of info. Last week the car lost oil pressure, spoke to a local VW Audi specialist, guy said right away "ballance shaft will be f**ked", towed it in to him, i've now given him the go-ahead to do the work at a cost of £1637, thats new oil pump@ £761+vat, pump gear, oil sump/strainer, nuts/bolts/sealant and an oil seal, gutted does not cover it. Only bought the car two months ago, already had to fit a new cable repair kit to the o/s/f window regulator (was i knightmare to do) and thing i need a coolant temp switch (doesn't start as good when warm as it does from cold), i love the car to bits but will have to weigh up if its worth it if im going to have to keep throwing money at it. I have receipts from 04/2010 for chain, tensioner and sprocket so not bothering with that when it gets rebuilt. When i bought the car it was between the a4 and an alfa 159 but i decided on the audi on a reliability basis, bit gutted, defo gonna write a letter to audi, got to be worth the price of a stamp to find out.

I too have the problem with the noisy chain and tensioner went to my dealer today they denied there was a problem when i asked him what my options were he said that they would only repair like for like. When I went to parts dept they said they would only sell me a conversion kit !! is this not admitting that they have a problem with the chain and tensioner?? went home read all these threads that made me even more angry so i rang audi they told me they were unaware of a problem i got even angrier called him a liar got angrier blah blah etc etc .

I have decided that i want to change the chain sprocket and tensioner and prob get rid of it (as i told customer services i would never buy an audi ever again )can any body help point me in the right direction so i can purchase these parts i have had no luck so far ?

surly it cant be that hard to find a parts no for the said tensioner to replace it ????

been on the phone all afternoon have all he part nos still no luck

I got all the part nos for (chain to chain) earlier this afternoon from this thread just cant find any one who has them

Noticed someone got hem from vw so im gonna try them in morn

any other leads would be helpfull

cheers grifter

I know Audi stated that none of their dealers would supply those chains any more but I know independent's can get hold of them, some sort of VW/Audi specialist.

got he tensioner and sprocket from vw today they didnt have the chain

Hi Guys please can you give me some help advice , i have a 2006 2.0 TDI with engine code BPW the oil pressure light has come on while driving its making a clattering noise i stopped the car straight away and got towed in , will it be the same problem as the early engines ????????

thanks in advance , phil.

Madphil - Sorry to hear about your problems. Sounds like the same problem but I would get it checked out. According to ETKA (the Audi parts catalogue), the early BPW (VIN No up to 8E -6-080 171) has the chain drive for the oil pump whilst BPW engines fitted to cars with VIN Nos after 8E -6-080 172 have the gear drive for the oil pump. Hope that helps.
BRgds

my car is the 3rd one he has done of this gear type they seem to be going between 50 - 60,000 miles from what he has seen the problem is carring over to the later type of engines maybe its only the BPW engines ????? , he told me audi know about it but they dont know why they are breaking

Hi aien, if you look bck to Jan 201O, I HAD SAME PROBLEM, i ALSO WAS SO UPSET I WANTED TO GO TO COURT, BUT THEY RELY ON THE LIKES OF ME TO FADE AWAY, I DID, & FIXED MYSELF, IE. REPLACED CHAIN, BUT I KNOW IT WILL COME BACK, HENCE YOU HAVE MY TOTAL SUPPORT, SEE NATHAN FOR MORE DETAILS.

GUYS WHY DON'T WE ALL PAY £100 AND TAKE THEM TO COURT, IF WE GET A NEWSPAPER TO BACK US WE CAN GET MEDIA SUPPORT AND ALSO TAKE THE FECKERS ALL THE WAY ND ET THEM TO REPLACE THE CHAINS!!!

ANY ONE SUPPORT ME THEN CONTCT ME ON murd.thomson@ntlworld.com, or also speak to Nathan who also started a campaign months back

Still not got my car back yet , i may need a sump aswell i have just been told .

I WOULD BE HAPPY TO SUPPORT ANY CAMPAIGN and think we need to get this out in the open ,

there will be people who are thinking about moving up to a newer B7 2.0TDI i would say DONT BUY a 05 to 56 plate car you are sitting on a time bomb and its not just the BLB engine codes

if it was volvo or any other respected car maker they would be recalled and fixed FOC .

Just joined this forum to add my weight to any campaign....I've been a victim of the oil pump problem. Audi wanted silly money to fix it. I went to an independent.... cost me nearly £2000. Luckily stopped the car in time before any further damage done.

I have sent an email to Audi today.....after getting nowhere with their customer services.

This is an outrage and we all need to stick together. Has anyone compiled any figures on how many people we know are affected....even just on this forum???

If we can get enough momentum behind this I may be able to offer my services as a web developer and get a dedicated website setup and perhaps collate / link the information from this and other forums.

I have also threatened Audi with BBC Watchdog. They done a report on a Vauxhall steering problem last week and they said they knew of approx 100 people affected.....I reckon this could be bigger.

I'd be interested to know has anyone email'd watchdog?

Unfortunately, the numbers are abismal, I've got 34 (35 with yours). I seriously doubt anyone is going to manage to push them into anything without more numbers or someone taking (not just threatening) to take Audi to court.

Hmmm. OK, I'll see how I get on with Audi. The email has apparently gone to the boss....or one of them. I'm not the type to rest until I get a decent answer....however I also appreciate we're dealing with a big organisation who possibly couldn't care less.....fingers crossed.

I am with you guys , i am gutted just got my car back and a bill for £3250 , the car has done 60,000 miles with full audi service and full indi service after the 3 years , its the later gear driven setup that failed ,
because i was in the outside lane of the motorway and in traffic it took the bigends and turbo aswell ,

also the new pump was bigger than the old one so i needed a new alloy sump aswell

we must get this out in the open how can audi get away with this ???????

After my email to one of the bosses I got a reply asking me to call them. I have basically spent two days arguing with them. They have consulted their 'techies' etc. and the result is a big fat no! It's not a manufacturing fault as far as they are concerned. When I asked why the original part is not replaced (we all know because it's not fit for purpose) she said technology moves on!!!

I was also accused of showing no loyalty to Audi as I had bought the car from an independent and not had it serviced with them. When I explained it had full audi services apart from one and the oil pump / balance shaft is not a serviceable part she went quiet then reconfirmed her response.

No brand loyalty!!! Basically unless you buy a new or approved used audi and get all your servicing and repairs done from them they couldn't care less about you.

BBC Watchdog next!!! I will be sending my email in the next day or two to watchdog@bbc.co.uk

I would suggest we all do the same....I appreciate the numbers on here are reasonably low, however if this gets national exposure I would guess the numbers may increase.

Good luck all!

My '55 reg A4 Avant 2.0 tdi, was not exhibiting any symptoms whatsoever. A week ago the oil pressure warning light came on and I immediately stopped the vehicle, put a litre of oil in, which I always carry, because I thought it might help. Restarted the engine and the light did not come back on. Drove for approx half mile and the oil pressure light came back on again. Phoned for Audi Assist and had the vehicle transported back home. I then managed to find out some info about this problem and consequently phoned Audi UK. Without any hesitation they told me that there would be some form of goodwill gesture and I obviously needed to contact an Audi Dealership, who eventually proved to be very helpful. Prior to my taking the vehicle in I asked for a worst case scenario and was told max £1400.00 for repair including 50% contribution towards the parts cost form Audi, which after a furter call to Audi UK I reluctantly accepted. Then had the vehicle transported to the dealership for evaluation and repair and was later contacted to be told that the balance shaft needed replacing AND that because of the oil pressure drop the turbocharger had gone! leading to additional costs making total of approx £2300.00. Yesterday 6th October, I contacted Audi customer services and am awaiting their response. I have had the car since new, it has been serviced regularly by Audi and it has done 138k miles. As I now believe that this is a known fault I am prepared to persue Audi over this, unless they accept liability, and would appreciate any supporting information. Many thanks RGG

Just a thought , isn't it cheaper Roger arecob engine as there are a few companies out there that offer a complete engine swap including collection of the vehicle for around £1600 . Obviously if your turbo has gone then that would be extra but at least you get a complete rebuilt and garenteed engine instead of your old one with a few new parts .

The only problem with this is that you are likely to end up with an engine that has the same inherent fault so how long that will last is anyone's guess. You could ask for a later engine model number but whether you'd need to recode the ECU is anyone's guess.

Spoke to a couple of recon engine suppliers who all are in the know regarding this design fault. They all said that they have now changed to a gear type system and not the old type current on these BLB motors . The prices range from £1600. - £2000 . That gets you a at best a fully rebuilt engine from ground up and fitted with 12 month 20k warrenty or at higher end but perhaps slightly better but not sure but just under £2000 gets you a as new engine with 12 months unlimited milage warranty but not fitted . Others offered for £1890 including vat and fitting a fully rebuilt engine again with newer gear conversion and 5 year 60k warranty . So from what I can see for under £2k you can get things fully sorted . Not that inane 2k sitting about but if my 60k engine gives up the ghost I won't be going to Audi !

Ecu will be fine to if you keep to the same type motor with just the later tweaks . Hope this helps anyone who's already in the poop. Happy to pm the companies I've found but there all on the web .

All,

Looks like some entrepreneur is to cash in on our sick engines by offering a repair kit consisting of some OEM parts and some parts that is being made by others. Have a look at ebay (uk) item 300476616997 .

Had a chat with that guy yesturday . He's based in Ireland . But his kits are nearly 400 quid so with all the labour needed to still do a job that gives you what you had before it makes more sence to go to a company offering fully rebuilt exchange motors with the updated gear system and pay a few hundred quid more knowing you have peace of mind, plus all other main internals renewed as well.
