    2005 A4 3.0 V6tdi Quattro trasmission noise

    Hi All

I've just aquired my latest A4 and it really is a bit of a beast but when pulling away in 1st or 2nd until the speed picks up there seems to be a bit of a knock coming from the rear of the car, or at least thats where it sounds to be coming from.

It increases with road speed and obviously when changing up to 2nd the frequency of the knock drops before picking up again??.

3rd 4th,5th and 6th gears don't seem to be affected but it really is more noticeable when pulling away in 1st.

if you just let the engine idle pull the car away from rest then the noise cannot be heard but when the throttle is applied it seems to pick up a knock??

Now it's not a loud knock, more of a dull thud type knock and it's not loud but it's definately there.

Now the car has had one company owner and has FASH and has only covered 60k with the last MOT having just been done before i picked the car up so really can't see it being serious but it's bugging me and would rather sort it sooner than later, any help would be much appreciated.

    Transmission Noise

Hi Mate, my car also makes a slight dull thud but more when engaging 1st, than when pulling away. I put it down to the 4wd, when the propshaft engages with the rear diff. Like you say, there is a lot of torque there. I'm confident on mine its nothing to worry about (my mate has a fairly new A6 Q and his sounds the same). If the car is new to you, you will always pick up on the slightest noise, however if you are really concerned take it back to the dealer. Hope this helps.

a friend has mentioned it could be the rear diff bushes??

it's only done 60, is this possible, i know there's loads of torque there so i guess it could be??.

The car was bought from a non Audi car salesman on wed 8th so maybe i should take it back to him and kick up a bit of a fuss??.

Any opinions on my rights regarding taking the car back for him to sort??, no warranty was bought with the car but i'm sure i've read somewhere that the car has to be right to be sold by a garage and that a buyer has every right to complain for work to be done??

    any ideas?

I really want to keep the car as it really is awesome but justy don't want to noise!

Hi mate, it doesnt matter if its an Audi dealer or not, they still have a duty to provide good service and aftercare. Check the contract you signed, it should have either have a cooling off period or details of any warranty provided (they usually provide one). On the subject of you keeping the car, the dealer would be very reluctant to take the car back anyway and 99% of the time try to get it fixed. If you arn't 100% happy, take it back and get it sorted or it will always bug you. I've listened carefully to mine today and there are definitely no noises when accelerating.

I rang the bloke back up and he said he had taken the car to audi to be checked because he had heard the same noise and they gave it the all clear, he also said that he would do the same again for me just for my peace of mind.

This time though, Audi said that the rear diff sounded to be on it's way out and then proceeded to quote about 5k worth of work!!, to say my car dealer was unhappy would be an understatement!!!.

It turns out that i do have a warranty on the car and that Audi are going to have a proper look at the car and diagnose the exact part hence not replacing half the drivetrain for no reason!!

The car dealer will also be taking the car the an Audi specialist to second guess the problem just so it gets sorted right and that the car is returned to me as it should be.

This car dealer seems a top bloke, definately gives a good first impression and his aftersales service etc seems good at this point.

i'll report on the exact findings later but to me 60k miles on a quattro drivetrain isn't a lot and really, this shouldn't have happened

    This problem is now fixed!!!

Audi recommended that the rear diff and prop be replaced, this was done by an Audi specialist with reconditioned items and the car still made the knocking noise so the car was then returned back to the garage.

He in turn then took the car back to the specialists for a complete shakedown check of all mounts, joints etc on the car, the only thing that turned out to be amiss was a heatshield
    slightly bent out of place.

This was duely straightened and the car returned to me, with absolutely no noise whatsoever!!!!!!!.

So now i have a recon diff and prop on my car and a straightened heatshield with no noises, how happy can a guy get!!

The garage which made sure the car was right was Rishton motors in Rishton, blackburn, i can do nothing but sing this guys praises, service was 2nd to none

    Mak
