I picked up my 2005 A4 saloon yesterday and while driving home noticed that the ECON light stays permanently on even when you try to turn it off so that the air con can function. Set the temp to 'LO' and the air blows colder but not ICY cold.

Can anyone tell me what is causing the ECON light to remain on all the time. There may well be a reason for it?

Thanks,

JOHN

I just found this in the FAQ thread of the Air-Con section:

"The light on the ECON button is on permanently, what does this mean?

This indicates a fault in the air con system. The most likely cause is too little or too much refrigerant in the system. The second fault will only really appear shortly after the system has been recharged.

Air con systems in cars are designed to take only a certain amount of refrigerant called R134a. You can find the amount your car needs on a plate under the bonnet. It is measured by weight and on an A3 for example the required amount is 525 grams +/- 25 grams.

If this warning light comes on then take it to an air con specialist ASAP."

Thank you. I'm going to mention it to the dealership that sold me the car and ask them to get it re-charged. Cheers.

It can indicate a leak as well, if the system pressure is too low it will stay in ECON mode to prevent further damage to the compressor.

If you can get someone with vag-com to scan it for you. My B6 did this and it was the G65 pressure switch, it threw a code in vag-com. I changed the valve and that was it sorted..

I had this a few weeks ago, and took it to Awsome-GTI to get it re-gassed, but it turned out not to be low gas pressue and the issue is they have to take the gas out before they can see how much is in... so have to pay for this before i started and it turned out that it was a switch/sensor that was faulty.

The issue was the sensor was right under the front end and they had to take the front of the car off to get to it, They did me a good deal on the labour as it took them way longer than they thought and had quoted.

All in all it cost me about £250, Thats with a AirCon Clean, New Filter, Sensor fitted and a Re-Gas..

Hey, thanks guys for all the info. Lots of maybes as expected. The main thing is that Lexus Edinburgh have told me that it shouldn't have been sold to me like that and that the workshop should have picked it up. I'm booking it in as per their instructions to have it repaired.

Much appreciated, and I'll know to keep a close eye on it when it's been fixed.
