    A4 2.0tdi s line. Steering wheel vibration

i have just purchase an 05 plate march 2005 with 33k on the clock fsh, and noticed on the motorway over 60mph a vibration on the steering wheel. Is this normal due to the suspension and low profile 18" 235/40 tyres, or are do the wheels just need balancing again, bearing in mind they are very new tyres!!

I would imagine it's a balancing or alignment issue, I have the exact same tyres and no problems at all. It doesn't take much to knock a wheel out of line or off balance.

I had my front tyres replaced a while ago the same low profile 235/40 18's, after about a week I had to go back and get them re-balanced as I was getting a vibration on the steering wheel. it seems the tyres just needed to settle down and bed themselves in. they're fine now even after about 5k more wear.

    wheel vibration

got them balanced but still a slight vibration must be to do with the low profile tyres on the bumpy road, any other suggestions??

Is the vibration better, but different? if so then it's possible they haven't got the balancing spot on, I have known that before.

Ive had this on my last 2 a4 avants (both s lines with 18's) and gone down the balancing route a few times but to no avail. It maybe worth checking the plastic underbody trim as this was loose on mine and was flapping about at speeds of 70 upwards, sorting this has reduced the vibration alot but its still not perfect, may check the bushes next but they should be fine really on a 25000 mile car.

Try using the steering wheel adjustment lever and pull the steering wheel slightly closer to you, then lock it in place (when you are stationary!). This worked for me for some reason, not sure if the steering column is worn or something...

Right guys i chased my own arse around with this on my own car which has RS6 wheels on. Its amazing how many reputable tyre house around my area which dont know this, if you have RS6 alloys genuine or replica they cannot be balanced correctly in the usual manner, a special adaptor is required and the wheel has to be mounted onto the balancing machine facing inward rather than the usual manner of facing outward, i had my wheels balanced 5 times and the vibration just kept coming back, then i found a small tyre house nearby which specialised in aftermarket alloys, this was the bloke who balanced my wheels spot on using the special adapter, (the adapter is just for holding the wheel on to the machine) the problem occurs because of the of the casting webs which are around the bolt holes, these stop the wheel being clamped to the balancer in a true fashion. Hope this helps guys, if you aint got RS6's and the problem persists you may just have a buckled rim or two.
