Hi,

My A4 2.0Tfsi went to the dealers today for it's 1st AVS service with 18.5k on the clock - They called me mid morning and said that the air filter needed to be replaced at a cost of £44 - Why would such an item not be included on the standard service ? ? Or are they just trying their luck - I was in a mad rush when they called so said "yes" but should I argue the toss tomorrow when I pick it up. They quoted me £272 for the service when I booked but this is now going to be nearer £316 !!!!

1 st AVS never included airfilter, that is done on the second, check out the service book and that gives you a break down on what is begining changed.

Did they not give a reason?

I would maybe ask why change a filter that should last 40K or have they found a problem with the car?

Seems strange why they are asking to chnage it with out a reason

Asking for the old filter will never happen now as that is well and truly in the bin

I would get them to confirm airfilter interval..Pollen filter should have been replaced..

Cheers Marmite, they said that the old filter was dirty ! !

or on the other hand....

Did they change it by accident and getting you too pay for it?

On an AVS1 why are they checking the filter? as it is changed at a set interval

The B*****ds, maybe they did change it in error and decided to charge me for it. Cant understand why it would have needed replacing so early...... Although I have agreed on the phone today, what do you suggest I say when I pick it up tomorrow ? In your professional opinion

personaly I would ask them for an explanation..BUT you have agreed the cost and given authority to replace it which should be documented and time stamped. can't realy argue that.

Ask the question though..If they bumble about just ask for the tech report sheet attached to the job card see if the tech reported it? If he didn't find out why....Parts might have given them the worng bits..Tech might have an apprentice working with him and he was too keen??

Check out the invioce itemised parts to see how much the filter is too thinkthey were £22 ish plus VAT for £44 is cheap..but I maybe be wrong 18months now since jumping the Audi ship

Just ask the question buddy and see what they say

Cheers Pal, I'll report back tomorrow and let ya know..... Wait to be amazed with the response. Have a good day tomorrow.

Just to let you know I found a very good VW/Audi specialist in Lichfield, Staffordshire who helped me the other day as my oil light came on. I also asked him about servicing etc. on a new (ish) car. They can even service a car from "brand new" car never mind a year old!!! Well you learn something every day...

Mark was VERY helpful and their cost of servicing was loads cheaper than an Audi stealer and they still stamp your book as Audi would. Check them out if your in this area...

I will only go back to Audi for work covered under guarantee!

Anyone else suggest companies like this in your area?

The Air filter does not need to be changed on a B7 A4 until the 3rd AVS Service (around 60k). I don't know what the place you're getting your car serviced is up to but i'd seriously question it.

your service sounds really expensive, always phone around prior to booking in as they will offer incentives to get your buisiness, I phoned 4 delaers for a 19k service on a 2.0tdi and the quotes ranged from £272, £256, £225 and finally £187 - you just have to be cheeky enough to ask, all my quotes were Audi dealerships. I'd be asking for a refund on the Air filter.

£44 for an airfilter you can change yourself for around £10?
They are seriously having a laugh even it did need changing.

Well, picked the car up today and no air filter change, when I questioned the phone call, she said that this was a mistake and was a little embarassed. I will defo call round next time as I'm up for saving money, as I'm sure we all are......

Out of interest I'm getting quotes for my A3 Sportback's 1st AVS service.

Standard charge seems to be 1.1 hrs labour for just the service (though not all dealers charge this until u remind them that is the specifed amount for the job!).

However according to the service book after 2yrs the pollen filter\pollution filter needs changing which appears to be £17.55 + VAT and 0.2 hrs labour which would total around £42 to £44. How old is your A4 and does the pollen\pollution need changing ater 2 yrs -the service schedule in your book will tell you.

A3 brake fluid also needs changing after 2 yrs, presumably the same on the A4?

Double check the invoice parts bit and see how many parts are booked out
