Autobox in backup mode

Hi everyone, im new to this forum. A4 2.4 SE auto.1999. The ECU in the drivers footwell has been imersed in water for some time, consequently the auto gearbox has engaged backup mode. Main dealer wants an arm and 2 legs, whats my best course of action?. please help.

First and foremost, I'd recomend re-posting this question in the B5 A4 section as your car is a 1999 model which makes it a B5, and they'd be better equiped to help you out.
