My starter motor has gone and needs replacing. Had a search and found a post saying that it is located under the air box on an a3 (I was hoping the a4 was identical) but I've removed my air box and it's nowhere to be seen 
I assume the a3 has a transverse engine layout?
Can't see anything from the top, so does this need to come out from underneath?
How big a job is it?
Car is an a4 avant 2.0 tdi pd170 engine code BRD.
