170 tdi flat spot/turbo not working properly

    Hello everyone,

I brought a 170tdi (BRD i think) a few weeks ago and found it has got a problem with the turbo. When pulling away from junctions the car will accelerate to around 2500rpm and then plod along for a few seconds before the turbo kicks and then carry on accelerating. When it does this it puts out a lot of smoke.

There are no fault codes and the garage I brought it from had a look but couldn't find the fault.

Any help would be great thank you.

Maybe the turbo actuator is sticking or the veins

Have you had car scanned with vcds

Yeah and it didnt find anything which was annoying! The actuator rod seems to move nicely so I don't think the veins are sticking. It is strange that once it is boosting it is fine

The garage you bought it from needs to look harder. Under current sale of goods regulations, for the first six months after the purchase, the burden of proof is reversed, so your garage has to prove the car is of satisfactory quality and fit for purpose. You do no have to prove it is not.

Go back to the garage, tell it you are rejecting the car as being not of satisfactory quality or fit for purpose, and force it to either repair the car or give you your money back. That should concentrate their minds a little bit.

Im writing a nicely worded letter at the moment and will add that in. I said i would like my money back and they said they wouldnt refund me as there are no fault codes and the garage they sent it to couldnt find any leaks etc. Im going to ask an vag specialist to write a letter to confirm it isnt working as it should to back me up.

It would be a lot easier to get my money back if i knew what the problem was. Shame really because its a great car apart from engine problems lol

But that's the point of the reversal of proof in the legislation. You don't have to prove it's faulty. The garage has to prove it isn't.

They are saying they have proved its good by getting a separate garage to scan it and to try and fix it! Ill send them a letter tomorrow and I'll put a few quotes from the sale of goods act in. I dont think its going to be easy getting my money back. Thank you for the help
