Recently I have been getting a weird noise from the engine, mainly at low speeds or when changing gear, almost like wastegate noise I guess.

I did consider it may be a sticky VNT mechansim but the car drives ok, I'm not getting the usual random power delivery or any overboost errors that I have had previously with VNT issues on other VAG cars.

Anything else to check that could make a similar noise?

you could possibly be right thinking sticky vnt , is it like a turbo flutter noise when you change gear ?

yeah it is a kind of flutter noise.

Wonder if this is possibly the cause of my noise - had the flashing coil fault light on today and limp mode with error code P0299 (Underboost)

I had a poke around and came across a fault with the intake manifold swirl flap actuator - I connected a vacuum pump up to it and couldn't generate any vacuum so I assume the diaphragm is split.
