    Drive Shaft CV Joint Issue

    Hello guys

wondering if you can help, i recently had the drivers side cv joint broke, what happened was that it popped out and went bang. so i replaced the whole driveshaft and now when i accelerate at about 65/70mph theres a vibration and sluggishness and than it drives perfect again after 80mph.. driving around town its perfectly normal too. now i called the driveshaft guys and they said that this sometimes happen on audi's and that i need to change the inner cv joint now on the pass side and all will be well.

doesnt sound right to me but i guess they are the professionals who deal with lots of driveshaft issues daily. also spoke to my mechanic who isnt sure.

what do you guys think or as anyone had this experience?

I've always replaced mine in pairs as seeing as they do the same milage/hours, if one goes the other is not usually far behind, keeps the labour costs down.

I'll interested in what others have to say though.

Same as above I changed both my driveshafts in pairs as I was having bad vibration when in D and stopped at lights. Jack your car up, support it on axle stands and put the car in neutral with hand brake on. Turn the driveshaft and hold the inner joint, any movement will mean its worn. But only a very slight amount of movement is acceptable.

As you say probably crap garage, don't know much on this topic at all but know lots about coming back worse off from garages that supposedly cure problems.

basically i bought a new driveshaft after a cvjoint broke, when i fitted the new driveshaft the car was vibrating when accelerating at about 65mph. called the guys who i bought the shaft off and they was like its the other shaft inner joint thats old so you need another shaft for the other side. bought that too and fitted and the vibration is even worse and now at idle too. car feels like a power plate vibrting away. so called the company today and they say that the old shafts were worn and the length was worn and the new shafts are basically too good for my old worn car. asked for a refund and they said they wont refund me until i prove i have bought other items. i told them i was going to audi to get genuine parts.

really boiled my piss and their lucky their not closer to me otherwise i would have not worried about my refund and would have used their shafts for other reasons.

its funny in a way as singhB7 has had an awesome experience with them

I had a few issues with front driveshafts on my B6 a few months ago.
Was partially down to me, fitting coilovers (the boots sit at a different angle, which they dont take kindly too after being sat in the same place for 10 years)

I noticed I had a torn boot on the nearside inner joint before any symptoms started occurring, I replaced the boot and filled with grease.
Around 1500 miles later the most horrendous vibration started occurring (which developed very quickly) - gearstick shaking.etc and sounded like the same symptoms you originally had - turned out the joint was already on its way to death after I fitted a new boot.
As drive-shafts were a crazy price from Audi, I bought one 2nd hand by searching for the part number - This solved the issue.

The excuse the drive-shaft company have made about the new shafts being too good for your worn car is absolute tat.
If its vibrating on idle then there may be something else to blame as the drive-shafts wouldn't be rotating when idling.
If its vibrating on idle it could be engine / gearbox mount related. - I know the rear gearbox mount can make one hell of a resonation in the car when they are dead.
