glove box door stiff to open on a4 avant?

Hi, my glove box door has become stiff to open over the last few days. Tried to open it and the left side hinge has snapped now. Took the cover off the side of the glove box (the opposite side to where the fuses are on the steering whell side), and there seems to be some sort of mechanism there with an electrode which isattached to the hinge, it looks like a strange locking mechanism. What's going on? Anyone know?
