Am I best off going for a 1.9tdi?

Hi there I'm looking for a 2007 b7 avant been looking through eBay and autotrader. Most seem to have the 2.0tdi engine but reading on the forum that engine is best avoided?

There are a few 1.9tdi b7 avants advertised but these seem to have less power and maybe an older type engine? and they are priced the same as the 2.0tdi. Is it best to go with a 1.9 or will that just feel to slow and noisy? Or do you think I will be ok with a 2.0tdi and not worry? There seems to be loads for sale surely they all can't go bad?

    Cheers.

My experience with the 2.0tdi units is that they are DOGS.
If I could wind back five years I would have bought a 1.9tdi and put up with the fewer "horses" and saved myself some several thousand pounds in repair bills.
The 1.9tdi is a legend among diesel units and their strong used values reflects their worth.

    1.9TDi?

You cannot break it with a stick.

Keep it well serviced, and it will probably live longer than you.

I've got an 07 2.0 tdi avant, I went through the same thought issue as you, so far after 18 months and over 100k engine is sound though front suspension is not which is a curse through most audi ranges, multi link **** arms the suspension should be known as! still like it though

    I have owned 4 1.9tdi's in the B5 & B6 models, just moved from a 2.0tdi B7 (170) to a B8 PETROL, the B7 2.0L (170) lump is ****e IMO, go for the 1.9 as close to bulletproof as you can get

I've got a b7 2006 1.9tdi Sline saloon. Great car mate. Get a good service history on one and check flywheel and clutch being replaced as common on then. Does feel dead on power but remap sorts that straight off.
I've had my one remapped to 146bhp, then I new turbo was going to need done so got turbo reconditioned and got 150bhp golf internals put Into it and bored out bigger inside. Car now 170bhp with upgraded turbo and stage two remap. I got it done with autotune ni and it's a pleasure to drive now with the plenty of power.

Sure the pre 2005 1.9 tdi engines are an all time great.

But post 2005 weren't some letting go and smashing a con rod through the block ?

Another happy 1.9 owner here, a remap helps and still get minimum 48mpg.

B7 1.9TDI's are only 115bhp and get to sixty slower than my old Vauxhall Corsa. If I had to go B7 it would be the 2.0tdi 170bhp to get the best of both worlds with performance and economy (got a b6 1.9tdi with 130bhp though... well originally was 130bhp haha).

I came from a Golf anniversary 1.9tdi 150 and was expecting the 115 A4 to be tediously slow but was pleasantly surprised, sure it's not going to win any races but it's not as bad as the paper figures make out and has tuning potential if required.

170 real world economy is pretty poor tbh, especially compared to similar spec'd bmws etc. Agreed extra performance is handy tho, great for getting to your garage or bank quickly to pay your frequent breakdown bills.

Good advice that thanks. I will avoid the 2.0tdi I think. I'm also looking at b6 and b7 1.9tdi now.

I'm not that bothered about 0-60 times really I just wrote off my other 300bhp car and lost all my insurance no claims so that's why I'm downgrading to a nice diesel audi
as long as I can drive up hills and keep up with traffic that's all I need

170bhp will make driving up hills and keeping up with traffic that much easier though haha, surprised the 3.0tdi hasn't also been considered as that's not too bad in regards to performance and economy. Maybe not quite as good on the mileage but coming from something with 300bhp it will most likely be a night and day difference whichever way you go.

170 2.0TDi here. Not had anything mechanical go wrong yet. Get 42-43 MPG tank-to-tank and that's a 50/50 town/motorway split. Long run's the DIS reports 52-53 MPG.

iv got the 2.0 tdi bre 2006... ran 20k miles/ 2years later no engine issues regularly serviced with genuine/quality parts.

Currently on 75k, timing belt changed at 60k and REVO engine remap. 45-60mpg average.

Of course, you have the right to choose any engine model you like....you are more than capable of making your own mind up, however, I feel you may be potentially entering a world of pain going for a 2.0 diesel, but then again you may be lucky....and I hope for your wallet's sake that you are!

Slightly off topic, but I have experience with a 2007 170 Touran that killed its engine and turbo at 50,000 miles. Can't say I have had anything with a 1.9tdi, but by all accounts its a strong engine, I have had a couple of 1.8T petrol and a 2.0T as well as having some of the bigger TDI stuff in the family, but I can say our experience with the 170 TDI was not good. Currently running a 233bhp 3.0tdi, love that to pieces.

The 3.0TDi combined with an auto box is an amazing combination. Plus, it's Tiptronic so you can still change manually when you fancy it.

I had the same dilemma as you I had previously owned an a3 2 litre tdi which was a lovely car to drive then bought an a4 1.9 tdi both on a 53 plate equally as nice to drive. After reading stories on here and wanting an avant I bought an 06 1.9tdi it's plenty fast enough it cruises lovely on the motorway as others have said its old fashioned technology relatively speaking but I haven't been disappointed by it. And we went from a golf mk5 gti to it.

I have a 2007 Audi a4 special edition 2.0 Tdi 170 Quattro. Brought the car in December 2012 with over boosting issues from a trader.

Turned out to be the turbo. And intercooler was leaking so that was replace. Then the dpf light came on so Rick at unicord dev remapped the dpf and egr valve and deleted the egr cooler. So far so good after that. The egr are a common fault. I cleaned the egr valves and took the manifold off and cleaned that and blasted it out red neck style. The 2.0 oil pumps are a common fault with the chain set up on early b7's (blb engine code) they were later revised with a gear but the oil pump runs a hex shaft which is weak. I done a old 1.9 oil pump conversion so I should be good. If I had the change to start from scratch 15 months ago I would of brought a 3.0 TDI Quattro and automatic pre 2006 which does not have a DPF and is cheaper on road tax. Early 2006 models have £400 odd road tax. Late 2006 motors have a dpf so they are cheaper on Road tax. DPF's deletes are becoming a Mot failure in Febuary 2014. The DPF's are expensive to replace they can be regenerated but still should be replaced between 80-100k. But to be honest if a mot tester can not see a dpf has been removed he can not fail the item. Just like most items on a mot.

Clutch replacement cost is another problem with the dual mass flywheel. I have to do that this coming week end.
I'm not sure if the 1.9's have a dual mass or not

    I'm a mechanic/Mot tester myself.

Im not sure if the audi 1.9tdi is the same as the vw lump, but a couple of blokes at work had golf 1.9tdis and they were getting 60 mpg all the time, both had done a lot of miles and were never any trouble all the time they had them.
Another thing I noticed the other week when I went to Aldi there were quite a few a4 models outside all ages some on foreign plates and probably all driven by foreigner and all were the 1.9 version, so it all for me!

1.9 = Bombproof - All the taxi drivers near me have them. I currently have an A3 1.9 tdi on an 07 plate. Feels indestructible.
