Hi I am going to look at a4 s line 2.0 tdi 170 57 plate in red with 72000 on the clock at the weekend with the hope buying,
But have been reading some real bad reviews and story's on the 2.0 tdi engine on the Internet.
Can someone please put mind at rest or is 2.0tdi unit that bad.
The car is up at 9950 and it's very big lump of cash for me spend, any advice would be appreciate.
Thanks in advance raymond

Is this a garage or private sale ?

1 check that it has a full Audi service history
2 contact the garage it has been serviced at and check the history
3 ask about oil consumption make sure it's not excessive
4 see if there is someone on the forum close to you with VCDS and get them to connect to the car to confirm mileage and check for error codes
5 ask if this has had the dpf or cat removed or mapped
6 don't just drive it round the corner go do a good 20 mile test drive get it at running temp and also as the seller not to run the car on the day until you get there so you can do a proper cold start.

I'm sure other will have a few other things to look for.

Hi it's garage sale, and the car has been either chipped or remapped but not sure which.
Should this have bering on my desion weath to buy or not.
Salesman has told me the car has wanted for nothing over its life, but we will see if that true when go to see her.
He also said its timing belt water pump and injectors done.

Just check its service history and find out who did the map, check for excessive smoke there will be a bit if it's had the DPF removed and find someone who can plug into the car.

I'm sure it will be fine but nothing wrong with making sure. :)

Cheers, really looking forward to it, I am just scared of what been reading and after owning BMW 330ci which was a complete @#&&ing nightmare from start to finish I don't want to get shafted again.
If all go's well at weekend I will pop a few pic up of her.

When I was looking at this version the only common issue I could find was this one so check if this has been done and if not contact Audi the Audi service centres used should be in the service book.

"There is an 'unofficial' recall, in that, if you have one of these cars, a quick call to Audi customer services, and they will set up an appointment with your closest dealer and replace all the Injectors (modified ones) and Loom free of charge."

I am sure some 170 owners will be along soon to confirm or deny this and point out any other things to look out for.

Was this recall only on the 170, not on the 143?

2.0l Tdi 170 - had mine 3 1/2 yrs,

Turbo replaced 40k
Audi recall to replace injectors 50k (smoked ever since)
Oil pump/balancer shaft/hex drive key upgraded (preventative measure) 75k
Coolant temp sensor replaced 85k
Oil cooler replaced 88k
Oil level sensor replaced 90k
EGR valve had been off with every major service and cleaned

Rough idle/smoking on cold start up tried everything to resolve

My car has wanted for nothing, but having owned 20 Audi's over 26yrs, this one has been the worst car for issues, that said i have enjoyed it and kept it longer than any other. There are thousands out there that have high miles and no issues.
My advice check to see if any of the above have been done.

If it's been looked after by an enthuisast you should be fine

I have driven Audis for 30 years and the 2.0tdi IS the worst engine they have EVER produced.
My recommendation is avoid the 2.0tdi units like the plague and if you must have a diesel get a 1.9tdi or a 3.0tdi.

To late bought her yesterday, going in to audi specialist on Monday to get the balance shaft upgraded so it can't go and have having the pdf filter taking out and then the car mapped.

I wish you well with the car , you may be one of the lucky ones and have few issues. good luck and welcome to the forum.
