Engine getting a bit clattery when put into drive

    2008 B7 2.0TDi Auto. 109k

Just recently I have noticed the engine getting a bit clattery when I put it into drive or reverse, take it back out it shuts up again. No difference if hot or cold engine. Drives fines with no issues.
    DMF replaced at 75k.

    Possibly a tired engine mount?

7 speed, not sure which one that is.

If I increase the revs slightly it goes away, its just on idle with the box in drive.

For what it's worth I had very similar sounding symptoms on a Golf Automatic some years back. I had it investigated by VW and by an Auto Box specialist and both parties said it was wear on the Torque Converter and that I should live with it. This was at circa 80,000 miles.
I took their advice and I got 242,000 miles out of that car without ever doing anything to the gearbox other than changing the ATF.
I hope this is of some comfort .

On my car I have the same gearbox 7 speed multitronic, my inner cv joints were worn and I replaced the driveshafts both sides and it stopped.

Paul B7, I did think of the torque converter, the gearbox is a couple of thou off its oil change, it may make a difference.

Singh B7, its only on idle with car not moving that I hear it, no other time. I would have thought if it was the drive shafts that it would make the noise while it was moving?

If the car is is D and it holds itself on hills with no footbrake applied its a proper auto, ie tiptronic
If not its prob the cvt trans
Some but not all autos have a flex plate between the flywheel and the torque convertor, these can crack.
Ive just reread your original post and you mention DMF replaced, i thought that was a manual gearbox only thing?

I think a more reliable way to distinguish what type of gearbox the car has is to ask if it is front-wheel drive or four-wheel drive. B7 A4 automatics with front-wheel drive have a multitronic CVT gearbox with multi-plate clutch. Quattro models have a traditional auto box with torque converter.

Using the term "tiptronic" to describe the traditional auto box is a bit of misnomer, as both types of box have a tiptronic mode.

In which case, I'm pretty sure it will be a Multitronic CVT. If so, then aside from anything else, it should have had its gearbox oil changed every 40,000 from new. Are you able to tell from the car's service history if that has been done? It's pretty essential to the working life of the gearbox.

JDP, yes, its due at 113k, I have owned the car since 6k miles and had it dealer serviced and gearbox oil changed at the scheduled times.

My mum has the same transmission and hers sometimes sounds horrific - it does seem to be quieter in S and louder in D. In S I'm not even sure it does it.

One mechanic who I trust with my car completely suggested we might have to take it to Audi for a proper diagnosis - or an auto specialist - but it seems to be fine one time its started and used, the next time you start it, its horrible. It like its catching on something that is broken.

It still goes OK and changes OK but sounds worse at low speeds.

To be honest, I'm not sure. I used to have a B6 with Multitronic, and was given conflcting information about whether it had a DMF or not. I sold it before I needed to find out.

    Ok, update.
Its in at Audi today to get the gearbox oil changed. I explained about the noise and they reckon its the DMF.
I said it was changed at around 70K, they checked the records and yes it was indeed, on the 7th December 2011, and came with a 2 year guarantee.

Sods f**king law isn't it, 4 days after the 2yr guarantee expired !

I said that I reported and booked it in over a week ago, which was before the 7th, and they are looking into it.

If you have reported the fault and brought it to their attention inside the warranty period, then they should not refuse a claim for being out of time.

I have the extended warranty so worst case it will cost me £250 to get it replaced. I thought it should have lasted more than 35K though.

They have it in and have found slack in the DMF, and want to charge me £250 for the warranty excess.
Not bad for £1200 worth of work I hear you say.

£250 too much for something that has only lasted 35K.
I have put my point to them and they are looking into it. I have already typed the draft email to Audi and its ready to go if I get charged.

    They still have it.
I needed a car for the weekend so they have just dropped off an 63plate A3.

Looks like I am joining the small car club for the weekend. May have to go on the 8V forum for a short time

I might go there and goad that my 8V A3 is the fastest and handles the bestest, its a loaner, everyone knows they are the fastest.

Be fun driving it though, not driven a manual car for about three years

Could be worse they gave me an A1, quite liked playing with the new Audi gadgets and gizmo's though loved the interface with iPhone bluetooth audio connectivity and the coming/leaving home lights were cool too.

On the whole its not a bad little car, the stop start thingy keeps catching me out and the boot was big enough to get Tracey's Xmas shopping in it.
Still miss the ride of my A4 though.

    Update.
The dealer has donated the gearbox oil change just leaving me to pay the extended warranty excess of £250.00, a saving of £190.00.

I am happy with the result.
