Hi i have an interesting problem

I have a 2005 55 plate 1.8t cab > when i brought it i had the Rac do there 300 plus point check and they cam back with the engine number BFB etc i've had audi change the cambelt and water pump over the 3 years i've had the car also 3 other gargaes have worked on it fixing one thing or another had a a broken hose replace rocker cover replaced(turned out they just stuck bits back together and cause a small oil leak!) battey plus starter motor. Now i've taken it to a gargae to fix the oil leak hense why i found out it was stuck last time! and they say when ordering a hose they couldnt find the right one as the engine is from a 1998 audi 1.8t???? with an engine code AEB now either the Rac are wrong and i would have never brought the car or something funny is going on ? At no time has someone swapped the engine out!!?? surely it wouldnt be worth the effort !?

Let me know your thougts i'm going to call the rac and see what they say

it could have been changed for the AEB
RAC wouldnt have looked at the number there lazy they will have just looked up up from the vin
so yes you may have got a AEB lump in there
only way to check is find the engine number on the engine itself.
 
It's possible that the engine was replaced. Whenever you get RAC or any other company perform a check on a car, they won't go as far as checking the engine code. As bez101 said, only way is to check the number yourself, but don't rule out the possibility of a swap.

What does the car's data sticker say? The engine code on the data sticker will be for the engine it left the factory with. So, if it hasn't been changed, then that should be what you have. But at Bez says, the only way to be 100% certain is to check on the engine itself.
 
the 2005 18T is normaly a BFB iv never seen one with a AEB lump fitted

did you ask the garage how they know its an AEB ?
 
Well i have the document sent from the rac printed BFB etc and if they had said it was a 1998 AEB engine in the car i wouldnt have brought it!

as i said above they wont look at the engine code

they will only look at the sticked etc or v5 or computer checks
 
Those RAC checks aren't really worth the paper they're written on as they typically include significant disclaimers along the lines of "The information provided in is limited to the information stored on the DVLA database" or similar caveats.

Nonetheless a disclaimer remove the threat of negligence, so if its significantly devalued the car it might be worth taking them to the small claims court.
 
the engine is a completely different style if it's AEB, id have thought even a blind spaniel RAC man would spot one of them bodged in.

It's just likely that an AEB part is still fitted on later A4's

Easy check, is the water pump external to the block? Where is the aircon pump mounted?

the blind rac blokes

told me the clutch or my escort cosworth wasnt a cable
and insisted on sticking it on a dolly for a 70 mile recovery
even tho he told me he worked for ford for 17 years as a top mech
