how to remove automatic front ashtray and 2.0T whats this in the boot??

hi,ive just brought a 2005 2.0T b7 and inside the left compartment of the boot there is a black box with a fan inside,it also has a slot either end but cant seem to be removed? any ideas what it is?? also how do i remove the front ashtray from my automatic? it wont open fully so i want to remove it to fix it!! thankyou

Just removed the front ashtray tonight.

First off remove the trim around the gear stick to reveal 2 bolts, then had to remove the stereo then the climate control so it would allow the ashtray to be removed
 
Do you have navigation? as it could be the analog tv tuner not much use these days like the one shown here
