    2.0 TDI 170 or 3.0 TDI Quattro

    Hi guys, looking into getting an A4 to replace my 2.0 TDI A3 140.

    Just wondering peoples opinions on the two different engines? They would be S-line models as I like the extras :D

    Also is there any common or major things to look out for when searching for one of these? Cheers

    I've just replaced my 2.0 TDi 140 A3 for a 2.0 TDi 170 A4. I love the car but had I known about the 'real world' fuel consumption of the TDi 170 beforehand I would probably not have discounted the 3.0 engine so quickly!

    I'm biased, but I have to say the 3.0TDi is in another class, not just for performance, but for smoothness and mechanical refinement. It's not just that it's fast, but it's effortless, and if you go for an automatic, it's pretty damn near seamless too.

    My Avant 170 always returns 38-40MPG round town and 48-50MPG on a run..............

    By way of contrast, my 3.0TDi Quattro Automatic returns 33-35mpg round town, and 40-45mpg on a run.

    I would avoid 2.0 tdi 170. Injectors, dpf, turbo vanes are known issues. Have second one now stupidly and can't wait to get rid.

    Love my 3.0 TDI its a manual and gets 47 on a run 39 around town. TBH its no worse than the 2.0 140 I had previously. But that grunt is adictive. 3.0 all the way

    My father in law has the 3.0 V6 and he has had swirl flaps go on one bank. He gets low 40's on the motorway.

    I've got the 2.0 TDI 170 and not had an issue (yet). I get high 40's on the motorway. Best I've had is 51mpg.

    THe inlet manifold flaps are an issue on 3.0TDis, but the good news is you don't have to go down the Audi-recommended route of wholesale replacement of the entire manifold assembly. It's now possible to buy replacement kits for the drop links (the most likely cause of the wear) or the fault code can be mappped out altogether.

    Drop links are only £9 from your dealer and can be fitted with much heart ache. Some eBay dudes are selling for double!!
