Hood issues

Hi all, I'm new to the Audi world having just picked up an 03 cabriolet, all's well with the car until i tried to drop the hood today, the symptoms are, all four windows drop and then the motor can be heard whirring but the hood does not unlatch or try to move. I didn't pay a lot for the car and as such am reluctant to be ripped off by a main dealer, just thought if any one had any similar issues they can help in resolving the problem.
