Service parts - which, where, who?

I'm planning on doing an oil change on my tdi 140 and figured I may as well do the fuel, oil and air filters too at the same time.

There's pages of parts on ebay and I don't wanna end up buying any old crap, so can anyone recommend parts/brands to go for?

Which oil do you suggest is best? I aren't too fussed on doing jobs like this so doesn't necessarily have to be long life oil.

I got all my filters from eBay but you could try Euro Car Parts, and get your oil from Opie Oils - search on the forum for discounts etc as he's on here. Get the best oil you can afford.
 
Does this site solely rely on ebay for parts?!

Halfords sell good parts still, there's bound to be a local motor factors who will get the correct parts for you based on your car, the problem with ebay is most of the time you will be guessing whether or not its the right version of your engine, right model etc. If you're going to service a car, get parts from a reputable local company that if they don't fit, you can take them back.
 
I bite the bullet and buy genuine Audi fuel filter, oil filter and sump plugs from my local Audi garage...there relatively cheap parts imho and gives me a bit of peace of mind. Everything else I will use motor factors like AZ Huddersfield, who offer brand parts and pattern dependent on your budget. As for oil, I use 5 40 Castrol Edge ( I guess you'll require some special diesel engine oil gear ).... and took my car of those longlife service the week I bought it. +1 with Judderman don't go cheap on oil. An oil change is cheaper than a tank of fuel and your wee engine will thank you later.

I would imagine its because eBay is cheap, just make sure you purchase the correct part you need before you buy, you could buy one from halfrauds and still get the wrong part! Personally I always buy all my service parts from Audi (apart from oil). Sad as it might be, my car is like one of my kids.. and deserves decent parts, I wouldn't kit out my kids in Oxfam so same applies to my car IMO of course
 
Cheers for the info so far guys. I don't wanna start a big dispute, I'd literally only mentioned ebay as I'd just quickly had a flick through for rough price ideas.

My first thought would probably be to go to audi as mentioned for that peace of mind. I was wondering if by doing this thread that anyone would suggest any parts that may be an improvement over audi parts. Performance parts I suppose you may say...

On the oil side, if people can give recommendations on which to go for that they've found to be good. Then that would be great :)

I believe one of the earlier posters recommended checking out Opie Oils, did they not?
 
Out of interest, have you tried contacting the local Audi dealer? I got some parts from mine recently and they were competitively priced (much to my surprise). I emailed what I wanted and they replied promptly. I guess it's just the crazy labour rates on getting the service done there that kills it. Sticking to my local specialist for that. :)

Spot on, Scotty. It's not the parts that makes dealer servicing ruinously expensive; it's the labour charge. The reason it's so high is that it carries a huge overhead element. Someone has to pay for that spangly showroom, the ever-so-cheerful service receptionist's salary, the fancy coffee, and the "free" courtesy car.
 
Though I have found that the Audi dealers do vary in price, my nearest one (Watford Audi) is pretty competitive where as west london Audi is quite a lot more expensive. Stoke Audi (sponsor on here) apparently gives discount to members and I find if I don't have the time to travel Lincoln Audi are cheap, friendly, helpful, CHEAP* delivery and competitively priced.<br />
*My apologies if I've mislead anyone into thinking the delivery was free, apparently its not, I've been unable to sleep all night due to the potentially misleading nature of this post so has now been edited, my sincere apologies to jdp1962 for this out and out liberty.

audi upgrades
I use either Euro car parts (currently have 20% off) or click car parts.

I only use Audi as a last resort due to them being a little 'simple' up here in Glasgow :ohmy:
 
Luke, scotty & TDP - You guys are making me wonder if I'm writing in an alien language ? :p lol

I said I would go to Audi for parts, that doesn't bother me. I was asking if there were any parts available that would be an improvement over standard maybe? Performance filters that could offer an improvement service over standard before I decide to go out and spend my hard earned at an audi shop.

JDP - I saw the suggestion of opie oils which I was grateful for, which was why I then asked for suggestions and recommendations of product rather than supplier.

Sorry; too quick off the mark. Best bet if no one comes back with a recommendation is to browse Opie's product range and check the individual specifications meet the requirements set out in your service manual.
