Should the engine management light come on if I unplug the above?

Yes should do. Mine came on after turning ignition off & on, also I think ESP light came on. Presume they're both fed from same supply.

It doesn't matter it's a diesel does it? Should come on whether it's a diesel or a petrol?

ESP light will come on to indicate that the ESP system is switched off... the ECU is a load based ECU which requires input from the MAF... the ESP controls engine torque which is derived from load... if the ECU is blind to load then the ESP can't control torque and is deactivated... a MAF open circuit fault code will also be logged..
