    2.0 TFSi New Engine issues

    This is my first post so........hi

    I have an A4, 55 plate, 2.0TFSi, S-line which I purchased in October 2009 for £8400 with 72,000 on the clock, Full Audi main Dealer service history, 2 previous owners.

    The car ran flawlessly & had not given me one problem whatsoever, I had it serviced by Main dealer on time always, it was used mainly by the wife to drop the kids of at school etc......it had 89,000 on the clock last week.

    Then 2 weeks ago, out of the blue the engine went, I aint no mechanic but instantly new by the jerk/shudder it was something serious, turns out the oil pump had gone, which i have been told is quite common, & then that messed up the cam shaft, but i still cant believe it as the car did not give the slightest indication something was wrong or about to go wrong.

    I was advised to replace the engine instead of the just the oil pump (around £1400!!) & cam as who knows what other damage could have occured.........so as i am sure some of you know........it was a nightmare trying to find a 2nd hand tfsi engine!

    I got lucky & found one down in birmingham, the lad said it was from a 2005 estate which had 49,000 on the clock (had to take his word for it), he wanted £600 for the engine but I managed to get just the block for £300 which i have been told is a bargain.

    I had it fitted by a local garage & got it back 2 days ago, I also had a new clutch fitted as the mechanic highly advised it, new air filter , spark plugs, etc as you would get in a service, All in all the bill has come to just over £900.......

    The car felt sharp as fxxk & all was sweet.......however, this morning i went to start the car & it just kindov ...coughed & then nothing, tried again & same, there was no sound of the electrics/ignition catching the spark plugs or it trying to start.....just a cough & then nothing.......on the 7th attempt it started.

    main points I have noticed

    1/ since i got the car back the oil sensor light/sign has been on
    2/ Econ light on my heating will not switch off
    3/ when the car finally started this morning the temprature guage rose very fast to the half way mark.....but did not go over where it has normally sat at (half way)
    4/ coolant sign has now come on also
    5/ when I was driving the car there sometimes feels like a hesitation in pick up when changing gears in2 a higher gear (for a second car feels like it is gonna stall)

    Its going back in on saturday & I was hoping for some advice as they are not proper Audi mechanics.....The lad said the starting issue i had in the morning was most likely the starter motor needing a good clean.....but he seems clueless abot the econ problem saying that the gas probbs needs refilling.

    I was told that maybe the car needs connected to the Audi computer to make sure all the things that are controlled by the ECU are correct, is this true?

    Any advice/info much appreciated!

    Sorry to hear your hassles. I am no expert but I had the impression that petrol engines didn't suffer oil pump issues....only the diesels. I am hoping this can be verified either way by other members of the forum.

    Hello Mate,

    The ECON light stays on as the air con system needs re-gassing (most likely they would have had to de-gas it while changing the engine - I have the same problem, just haven't got round to doing it.

    I'm afraid petrol engines can suffer with oil pumps.
    As for the other bits I would get it plugged in by someone with vagcom or vcds
    Imola Yellow A4 DTM. Retro fit cruise and arm rest.

    I also had oil pump failure on my 05 TFSI last year, cost me a bloody arm and a leg to get fixed and has definitely tainted my opinion of Audis (the previous 3 of which had been pretty reliable). I don't know what the root cause is on the TFSI's but I don't think it's the same as the balance shaft hex nut rounding off on the TDi's.

    In my case some of the gears inside the pump seemed to just disintegrate, god knows why. You can see the results here though

    To confirm what g12 says, your aircon likely needs regassing, as some of the aircon pipes have to be removed to get to the oil pump. Mine's the same - Econ light now permanently on as I couldn't afford to get the aircon regassed on top paying £1,700 to sort out the oil pump.

    Interesting issue. Does anyone know what it would cost to change the oil pump as a preventative measure, i.e. before it blows up?

    A replacement pump from Audi was around £900 + VAT a few months ago when mine failed. Cambelt has to come off too, so should be replaced at the same time, those aren't expensive though. Labour-wise it was about 6 hours from memory.

    Holy sh*t!! £1080 for an oil pump.
    I only had my cambelt and water pump changed about 4 months ago so think I will leave the oIl pump alone!

    Yeah that was my reaction too, once they'd picked me up off the floor. For weeks afterwards I had to stop myself thinking about all the other things I could've spent £1,700 on!

    I thought the garage were ripping me off so I rang the local Audi dealer myself, only to be given the same price. The only consolation is it's a redesigned part that replaces the chain and sprockets with gears so it should be more robust. It'll probably outlast the rest of the car now (mine's done 126k miles).

    Wow....all this is a shocker for me!...Jaysus, I have not heard of oil pumps failing on petrol engines. Is it a specific issue to certain 2.0t petrol engine codes or does it affect all of them right across the board?

    If you take the time to read through the sticky at the stop of the forum page on the 2.0tdi oil pump/balance shaft isues one will find several members have reported oil pump failures on petrol engines. Not sure anything specific has ever been put together on petrol engine codes but i would think its a fair bet that any petrol B7 petrol engine from the 2005-2007/8 COULD be vulnerable to this Audi design defect.

    2.0 TFSi New Engine issues

    Econ button could be on cos air con pressure switch failed. Pick up pipe blocks up and that starves oil pump which causes problems on petrol engines. I'm thinking of replacing mine whilst doing my k04 turbo

    oky, the lads at the garage have sorted out my oil pressure/coolant sensor warnings.

    now i have a new problem!!

    whilst driving i put my foot on the accelerator and the car starts picking up then very suddenly jerks with a total loss of power through the accelerator......it just stops dead in its tracks but somehow does not stall, the rev bounces erraticaly for a sceondthen it somehow settles, its very intermittent and can occur in any gear, sometimes it will happen when im setting of in 1st gear at low speed, sometimes whilst im driving in 4th or 5th gear.

    they put the car on the computer and the only fault code it gave was a speedometor sensor warning? what does this mean & does it have anything to do with the problem described above?

    please help!

    Hi Ehan, I also have a 2.0TFSi Quattro S-Line, 56Plate, with only 78K Miles in which the engine has just gone.....

    The first indications were the Engine Oil Pressure Too Low (Red Fault Light), so I checked the oil, levels were fine but added an extra 1 litre, decided to take it for a run and everything was good for about 30miles, then the same fault light appeared and also the EPC Fault light and 1minute later the car came to a hault, game over.....

    Local garage checked it over and there was NO compression in the engine chamber, basically telling me I would need a new engine. Worst of it is that my warranty just ran out 3 months ago.

    Quotes from Audi for a brand new engine were given in the figures of £6K, but after browsing the internet I have come across the following; Products | Nat Engine Centre

    Has anyone ever dealt with this National Engine Centre, the website cartainly looks good....

    Question is, is it even worth getting another 2.0TFSi engine again???....
