S4 2005 buying advice - auto tip tronic or manual

Been looking at replacing my s3 8l with an s4 and after some buying advice.

What transmission should I be looking for and what else needs to be considered?

The answers people give you on which transmission to choose will be based on their own preferences, which may not coincide with yours. You need to drive both, and decide which one you like the best. No one else can do that for you.

As Jeff said, personal preferance.

What type of driving are you intending on doing? If you're planning on taking it on a track then don't bother with an auto, but if you spend a lot of time on the road the S4 will have enough power to make good use of a tiptronic box. Never drive a CVT A4 myself, but had a Auris last month with a single speed box and it was wierd...

Having said that I vowed I'd never buy an auto, but having now had an auto I'd find it hard to go back...

The S4 doesn't use a CVT box, it's a traditional auto box with torque converter.
