    2.0 Tdi 170bhp - oil pump failure

Just been called by the garage who we were booked in for an MOT and service with, to be told we have a noisy knocking sound from the bottom end and they suspect its the oil pump. They have also said it could be about £2K to replace it!!!

I know there's a sticky relating to this problem but it seems to be the 140bhp engine rather than ours... What is the correct engine code for my car? Is it BRE?

not sure if its worth spending the money on the car or writting it off tbh. It has the standard limp mode issue that we haven't been able to resolve and its done over 130k. I can see it becoming a money pit!

    i feel sick!

My 2007 56' is a BRD but I don't know if all 170s are the same?
This thread is worrying, 2nd one in a matter of days, Richardesty is having similar issues.

Sorry to here ya news fella, It effects both 140 and 170. They seem to be dropping like flies at the moment. Im sure i have seen at least 4 new threads in the last month from forum members with the dreaded low oil pressure light coming on. At least your as been potentially diagnosed before the light has come on and your turbo is most likely fine. There are other companies such as powermax engineering that recondition the balancer. I cant vouch for them though, but maybe someone else on here can.

    Good luck

Thanks for the info guys! I guess mine is a BRD then as its also a 56 plate 170bhp engine...

We've had no end of trouble with the intermittent limp mode and no obvious solution and now this! I guess this engine variant is coming to the end of its shelf life at 6 years old!?!

I may live to eat my words about German engineering and reliability!

My garage have said they use a company in Ireland who re-manufacture the balance shaft so it does save a bit of money but realistically it will still be £2k - not money we have and especially just before Christmas!

U could have a look at getting a new refurbished engine with that money.

The company in Ireland will be Powermax, Google them and check them out.
If you get the chance have a look at the November issue of "Audi Driver" ( I read it for free in WH Smiths) as there is an article with everything one could wish to know about the 2.0 tdi oil pump/balance shaft issues and the options available and where to go to have them fixed.
I wish you well and have no goodwill towards the Audi company for leaving us to sort out their design defects at our own cost.

Thanks for the advice chaps. I will see if I can get hold of a copy of Audi Driver which will hopefully give me a bit of direction with this.

My only other option (like I have said before) is to sell up and I do believe this seems like the most sensible solution - if I can find the money. I would like another A4 Avant though but it seems like all diesel b7 cars have issues, DPF, EGR, oil pump, injectors...the list goes on (and on)!

So this leaves the question; Is there a reliable B7 engine (petrol or diesel) or is that just wishful thinking?

I wouldn't say that they are unreliable. Unfortunately you only hear of the problems when people need advice. There are probably loads of people with B7's who ain't had any real problems

Fossie and Rowdyboy are both correct and I would add the 1.9tdi B7 to the 3.0tdi suggestion, bullet proof engine albeit it a little less power than the 2.0tdi.

I must say the 3.0 has crossed my mind... thought I had read about DPF problems though or are they on the whole problem free?

As for reliability, I won't argue and I'm certain there are people driving problem free 2.0 Tdi b7's but they are also driving round with a car that needs an injector recall (if its not been done already) and a flawed oil pump design. Time bomb?

Don't get me wrong, I love these cars and am looking to replace with another. I'm just having all the bad experiences possible with my one at the moment!

No real progress to report but I've started looking at our options.

option 1 - fully recondition engine for £2154 (inc. oil pump). This price also includes new serviceable items - coil packs, spark plugs, filters etc and 24 month warranty.

option 2 - sell to 'we buy any car' for £4.5(ish). Borrow £6K and replace with something else (German but not a 2.0 TDI!)

there are pros and cons to both really - option 1 could go up if the DPF and Turbo need looking at. DPF is £1K or delete and re-map is £800 and I can do the Turbo for about £750. So, if I consider worst care this would mean I spend a total of £3,800 but we would have a virtually new engine and a car I know the history of. The down side is that I have no guarantee that my intermittent coil light and limp mode problem will be resolved and the car will still be dangerous/unreliable.
If I chose option 2, I need to borrow more money but will have a newer car with less mileage, which could have as many (if not more) problems that I don't know about.

my head says sell sell sell and my heart says get it reconditioned!

i have to say I am impressed with the cost of reconditioning the engine for £2154 especially when you consider I've been quoted £2k just for the oil pump! Re: 2.0 Tdi 170bhp - oil pump failure

Sounds like you got a few options there. Regarding the reconditioned engine, what mileage does it have? have they inspected and fixed hex and balancer for wear and if reconditioned how? Cheep option would just replace hex into already worn balancer not so good imho but if you plan to sell with in warranty then not a problem for you I guess. You might just be replacing your engine with something that will eventually fail in the same way if new unit hasn't been suitably recon'd.

If your car has not gone pop with big red flashing light on dash. Hopefully your turbo and dpf are fine if that's the case I would go OEM. For that u get Audi 2 year warranty plus a revised balancer unit, better aligned and with longer hex 100mm. This would probably cost same as recon and you have assurance of improved unit and to hopefully last for the rest of the cars life.

I posted a link to Audi driver article in another oil pump failure thread a few days ago. Worth a read if u haven't already.

    Cheers

Thanks Matt, should have been clearer - option 1 is to recondition my engine and they estimate needing our car for 2 weeks to do the work. This is a full refurb and they recondition the balance shaft as part of the process.

My local specialist also said that they would send our balance shaft off for a refurb if they carried out the work...

Can our existing balance shaft be modified to save this happening again in the future?

Will have a look through your posts and see if I can find the AD article you posted...

    Thanks again mate

    You can find it here

As for modding there is info in that article, powermax being mentioned also. But who knows if they will stand the test of time.

    Thanks Matt!

Unfortunately a week has passed and I'm no further on with making a decision about what to do! If we sell 'as is' I think we might get £2-£2.5K with faults declared. We would then need a further £6-£8K to find a replacement (A6 Avant, Passat CC or similar).

    or

We spend £2K on getting the engine reconditioned plus possible turbo, dpf and any other serviceable items. So I feel £4K is fair for the worst possible scenario.

I've gone full circle with my thinking and am back at the refurb option but I'm worried that its a lot of money to throw at a 132K mile car that could possibly still leave us with the limp mode problem!

    aaaggghhh! Bloody car!

    What would anyone else do?

if it's going to cost £4k all in, unfortunately I'd say bin it off. It's going to be a bitter pill to swallow and you have my sympathy.

As for the DPF issue on the 3.0tdi, do what I did and buy the pre DPF model.
