Time to change the chain and tensioner and cam follower.... Camshaft???

2.0t fsi quattro, engine code bul

As above really guys, I've noticed that there is a revised camshaft available.... Is it likely that I will need this aswell?

it runs fine just noisey.

any help would be great.
 
Out of interest how many miles have you done? (from memory this is 116k miles or something?)
 
Hi Craigcull. Just out of interest how much are you expecting to pay for this work all in?will it stop the noisy tappety sound you get from these engines? Ps my car has the same engine and yes it does sound like an old diesel when ticking over..:sadlike: Cheers mate..

well this is the thing mate, I dunno if I'm looking too far into it. I'm gonna post a video later and see if anyone thinks its just me or its time to fix
 
Yes I know what you mean..My car is just short of 42k miles and sounds very tappety? I,ve been told countless of times by my main dealer that it is common for all Audi 2.0 tfsi engines to sound rough on idling,something to do with the high pressure fuel pump??They even started up a 2012 reg TT with a 2.0 ltr engine to prove the point and yes it was tappety but not as much as mine:think: I will look forward to seeing your video and comparing this with my car..cheers mate...

I've done my chain and tensioner. Made it better. I didn't bother with camshaft as looked ok and wasn't paying the money for a new one
 
How much? and did it cure the noise completely..:icon_thumright:
 
Mine was 500 quid at a specialist. There is a special tool requires for the tensioner
 
cheers mate. what mileage was on your car and what made you decide to get the chain tensioner done? ie how excessive was the noise etc...thanks
 
It was about 60k. Just quite loud. Not as loud as some but loud enough for me

I've had these noisy at 20k and not noisy and original at 100k. Just luck of draw and history I reckon
 
Going to post a video today, see what you think. I want to get it changed for piece of mind, but I don't wana spend £500 if I don't have to. But then again, I don't wana risk it and end up needing a new engine lol!! It's booked in at audi Leeds on the 19th, £100 just for the diagnostic, but atleast if they say its ok and then it throws the chain through the side of the bell housing, I have something to fall bk on, also if the cam is worn, I'm gonna ask why they never issued a recall, seens they have made a tougher camshaft.

Sounds very similar to my car. a very distinct tapping noise from the high pressure fuel pump at the back of the engine..Not the sort of thing you want to hear from a premium build car.Makes you embarrassed to start the thing up when you got people around if you know what I mean...

It seems cars are only subject to a recall if the issue is safety related and VOSA get involved.
Otherwise its down to the "goodwill" of the motor manufacturer and as we all know Audi are not exactly benevolent.

totally agree mate, I had a 1.3 mk4 escort that sounded the same, it is embarrassing, special when I've been asked if its a petrol or diesel lol!

your right there paul, but the advantage we have now is vag expect each dealership to get a gold star from every customer, wether it be skoda, seat audi or Vw. So all you have to do really is take up the matter with customer services, I may not get everything as good will, but I'm hoping to atleast get the camshaft, especially when there is clearly an issue with excessive wear between the camshaft and follower. I work for skoda, and if they don't meet the required targets for customer service, the franchise loose there yearly cash injection from the brand...so hopefully a cost of £100 could potentially save me £300 or even worse, a new engine. I think it's just a case of speaking loud enough to the right person :)
 
After looking through my service history, Audi never state anywhere in the service schedule that the cam follower should be inspected, neither do they mention about replacing the chain and tensioner..... The only thing they recommend to change every 115000 miles is the timing belt. Surely this will be a good place to start with hopefully receiving a gesture of good will. Or atleast I hope....
 
My dtm has had new hpfp and can chain and tensioner. Still very tappety due to injectors I think. Put an exhaust on it and try and hide it is my way of thinking, or make it too fast for anyone to hear haha

haha!! I think I'm gonna change the cam follower on the hpfp and look through the hole for any damage to the lobe on the camshaft, then atleast I've illiminated something, then if its still noisy I'll drop it into Audi and then they can look at it.
 
When we did mine had to buy the tool for cam chain tensioner. I saw a little bit of wear on camshaft but thought it was ok hence why it went back together

How much was the tool mate? Did you just buy the chain, the tensioner and the follower?
 
I don't know to be fair. Think we burrowed it off dealer first then my boss bought one. I had a quick look about 20quid I think
 
Chain replaced yesterday.... And what else can I say other than.... My 2.0 tfsi no longer sounds like a diesel!!!! :) even tho this wasn't the main concerning issue, I strongly advise anyone that has any doubts with the chain and tensioner, to get it looked at by an audi master tech. I had 10 mechanics tell me I was being paranoid and they are a noisy engine, only 1 mechanic confirmed my concerns. Funny enough this was the mechanic who fixed it in 3 hours and told me it was ready to fail at anytime...... But even with 97k in the clock the variater showed no signs of play and didn't need to be replaced.

so the overall cost.....

parts including all gaskets, chain and tensioner £155

All tools for the job £95

labour £150

if anyone requires the part numbers for the tools and the chain etc, I will post on request. :)

hi paul, it was a side job from an audi master tech that I used to work with, so I'm not sure on what the main dealer would charge, but I would definitely consider not using the dealer, all the other mechanics I asked wer also audi mechanics, so I guess it's a case of who you trust over what you want to hear. I went with my Subaru blow up every week instinct and went for it haha!! :)

Craig mines just hit 73K and the ticking/startup noise does bother me whether its still in tact or not Id fancy changing the thing for piece of mind also cos as you say its alot better than a new engine in the long run.

Can you just give me the parts you had changed specifically and the part numbers?
And.. I visit manchester quite often and see that you arent exactly a million miles away... do you think your audi master tach mate would do mine for the same price if I came to you to do it? REALLY dont want a dealer to do it and your guy clearly knows what hes upto.

I'll give him a bell today mate and I'll see if he's ok with me passing you on to him. I can always give him my tools that I bought especially for the job to save ya some cash. I'll be bk on this afternoon. Just off for a walk in the park with the wife and the dog :)

It's just missing the torx 40 socket. They do have a part number for it but I'm sure any torx 40 socket will do. I borrowed it from work. Kit looks the same as mine other than that :)
