Well my cars been in the garage all week trying to get to the bottom of my rough running issues, it's had the tandem pump replaced due to oil contamination in the fuel, the injectors have been tested and the seals and actual injectors are fine as are the nice toe holes in the head. The egr is ok so it's been narrowed down to worn cam lobes on the exhaust cam. :(
lwhere would be the best place for me to get a camshaft kit from for me to change all of these over, the man from the garage has been really nice and said if I want to try tackling this myself I can use his garage and tools and he will just give me a hand when I need it to try and save me money on labour.

Thanks for your help eveyone, this is really doing my head in now I just want my car running right :(

That's unusual for that engine, no doubt others on here will know more than me, would a 2nd opinion be an idea? I would look on Club TDI.com anyway, they have been sourcing replacement cams to replace the choclolate ones for early PDs for a while. There's also more UK based people on the now as well who may have found sources in this country to buy them rather than having to import.

It went into audi before I took it down to the indi and they wanted to charge me £800 just to take the head off and inspect the valves as they have checked the injectors too, there is a video on on of the posts of here with a pd engine that sounds the exact same as mine on tick over with worn cams but its an 8v and not 16v. Ill try and dig out the link.

Morning Paul mine is on 133,000 now this is why I'm thinking the same. We can't think of anything else it could be.

Mmmmmmmmmm new one on me, I have not heard of this before on the Audi engine.

I hope so mate cos I've about had it with the car now, starting to wish I'd bought a BMW like I was going to. :(

It's got a full audi history so I doubt it but you never know, I only got it this feb and it had just been serviced and I serviced it a few weeks ago. I've taken it to my mate who runs a vag specialist today and were going to have another look tomorrow, he said it may be the air con pump pulley so were going to slip the aux belt off tomorrow and see if it stops. If not the only thing left is the cams so were going to take off the rocker covers and have a look at them. Fingers crossed hey, but it still smokes a bit too so it's a strange one.

Mine ran rough, hesitated too at about 1600 - 1800 rpm. I changed the vacuum unit on the inlet manifold ( £10 ) and cleaned flaps in the manifold while it was off, they get covered in crud. easy enough job and now it runs fine. Might be worth a try for what it costs

I would say that's a good call but the mechanic has bad a camera in there and says its fairly clean and the test is coming back as only cylinder two is over fueling so it's been narrowed down to that one cylinder which is why we're led towards the cams. Audi wanted to take the head off as they suspect possible compression problems but all my Indys have said its not that and to check the cams first before going all out and removing the head. We will just have to see what tomorrow brings once I remove the rocker covers and have a look.

Well I had the rocker off today and all the cams look fine, it's stopped smoking for the time being and is starting to sound a little bit less 'tractor-ish' fingers crossed its just the contaminated fuel being cleaned out and the dpf being cleaned of oil. There is still a faint knocking noise when the car is revved or under load and now another mechanic is saying it may be the crank :s I could do with having another tdi 170 sat next to it to actually see if it sounds any different or if its just me being paranoid now
