Hi all

Since i have had the car i have had a nearside front knock when i go over un-even ground/train crossing/cobbled roads. It sounds like a normal fault that points towards upper arms, arb link etc.. but for love or money i cant find the knock. I have had it at a local garage twice that ive used for years and they cant find it either. They also confirm that there is a knock and im not going mad, so just opening it to you guys to see if you have had a similar experience.

Cheers
Simon

Check engine mount for leaks, they usually throw a code when they go.

End ---------------------------------------------------------------------

nothing jumps out to me.

CV Joint, tracking rod, ARB, bushes? no codes so must be mechanical. Try banging the lower engine covers a bit see if it makes the same noise.

To be honest a few people have said bushes, but its too hard to tell. The noise is definitely metal to metal.

Gonna have to get the wheel and arch cover out to check the bushes. Id definitely check these if youve had a second opinion on the track rods etc.

Dont rule the engine mounts out just because they are not throwing a code.

It doesnt sound like an engine mount if you know what i mean, i could have put money down on it being an upper arm, but its definitely not. Its going to a local VW/Audi specialist next thursday so im hoping they can find it as its driving me mad.

I know what you mean had the same on my previous tdi 140 and i was back and forth from garage checked everything ...it sounded like a rattle when on uneaven road passenger side.?? coudnt find it mechanic said wait till it gets louder then come back

:(. The car drives so smoothly as well, it's just this that's annoying the hell out of me!

Well the car has been at an audi specialist today and even though they can hear the knocking they couldnt find anything on inspection. Great!!

Cheers goose, may wait till Xmas is over and change them.

hi.
i had exactly the same symptons on my s3. about five different places looked at it and found nothing.
i changed the arb drop links yesterday and it has solved it. i have inspected the old units, and there in no play in them at all. but has definatly fixed the problem.

hope this helps.

Cheers goose, may wait till Xmas is over and change them.

Plus, i'm not sure if it's in my head or not, but seems to feel more direct when turning-in... less vague. now feels sort of like my old Mk4 R32

goose

Mines there when there is less load on that wheel.
