I'm looking to replace my b6 2.5tdi 180 in the not to distant future but have been undecided which route to take, petrol or diesel

I think the torque is great in the diesel it's no slouch for an oil burner, maybe a little too much weight up front for oversteer but I can live with that

So do I go for something rev'y and lighter at the front on the fsi or the heavier, torquier tdi (even more so mapped)

anyone owned both that can compare? Pro's and cons to either? Would an rs4 rear arb change the handling?

Mine as it stands

i would ratehr take 3.0TDI cuz u get more power and muuuuch more torque
thos if you want a good exhoust soundsystem and if u want to overpower ure car then 2.0TFSI

i got a friend with B7 3.0TDI overpowerd to about 306HP even B7 S4 doesnt have a chance :D

Having owned the B6 2.5tdi (163 2WD) which had a stage 1 remap, and now owning a 3.0tdi quattro (also stage 1 remap), I would say that the performance is fantastic. Also the fact that you get 35mpg on a average run is a big bonus.

With respeact the th ARB, I've just replaced mine, and it makes the car a LOT flatter in the corners, and for £95 for all the parts it's definately worth it!

With respect to exhaust note as mentioned by lenti... being a diesel it starts off at a disadvantage, however it's a V6, and it's a turbo... I'm having a custom exhaust made/fitted on October (will post post etc when done) and having heard similar car the garage has made... it's surprisingly impressive!

I'm biased, but for the reasons listed above, 3.0tdi over the 2.0fsi

I think your car looks great as it is and if it's running right why change ? You will have to pay extra to buy the car in the first place and the larger engines will be more expensive to tax and insure. On top of that the v6 responds pretty well to tuning as well so all you need to do is source a GTB2260Vk turbo and a custom remap and throw in some larger Bosio PP683 nozzles. Easy 250 Bhp and with more grunt and less expense than buying a newer model !

this is the sound my mate gets on his 3.0TDI, Enjoy ^^

Erm... shoe laces??

Personally I wouldn't trust the HPFP in the 2.5tdi to run 250bhp, having had one fail on me and cost half what the car was worth to repair it (probably close to the whole cost now given it's age). The 3.0tdi is common rail and as a result much more reliable... Plus 233 bhp as standard & 260 with a stage 1 remap, which is a lot less effort and cost than upgrading turbos and injectors

I have a 2.0TFSI but would have bought a 3.0TDi if I could have found one in my budget. :)

I have a 2.0tfsi. Looked at a v6 tdi but with inlet manifold. Throttle body issues on v6 tdi I went for 2.0tfsi. I don't need the mpg as my work is about 6 miles each way. Gotta just list + £ -'s and I would suggest driving both too

Don't really fancy modifying the ake, too many scare stories that put me off.

work isn't all that far for me either which is another reason why I was tempted with the fsi

I've just sold the Evo 8 I had as I couldn't justify 13mpg and having to worry where I park it etc, so fuel costs for either of them aren't really an issue.

Just recently down the motorway in the a4 I was cruising along the wrong side of 70 and an a8 3.0tdi sailed past I didn't have a leg stand on and that was a big car

Theirs not too many well spec'd 3.0tdi's out their compared to 2.0 quattros. Even though I'm more tempted towards the 3.0

Inlet manifolds are 400 plus vat each retail. Throttle body about 280 plus vat. Those are the things I took in to consideration. The 3.0 tdi when mapped are awesome. I mapped a 4.2 tdi a few weeks ago and the guy now gets 120 more miles per tank. Car pulls and makes my 280 ish 2.0tfsi look like a fiesta

Stock pump with large nozzles will be fine for over 400 bhp, it's just not much kit out there for the v6. The gtb2260vk feels better converted to vacuum than it's on the 3.0 tdi ....

What exhaust setup are you going for? I'm assuming you're having the DPF deleted and the EGR mapped out etc. I'll be looking at getting something done in the near future, still in two minds whether to delete the DPF or not (not a fan of black smoke) but I suppose I wouldn't need it if EGR was disabled anyway. Don't want something that drones either as I'm on the motorway everyday.

There is a fix for the common inlet manifold flaps, supposedly about £250 from what I recall. The flaps make virtually no difference to performance or reliability so they don't need to be repaired necessarily as long as they are mapped out to stop the dash warning light (MOT failure)

What spec are you looking for? It just takes some searching...

See above about manifold flaps. Also if you have a 3.0tdi you should get it mapped no question. Just watch your clutch if you have a manual...

DPF & EGR already deleted with the DPF innards removed. I'm going for a CAT back custom system, from the exit of the 1st CAT, replacing the DPF/2nd CAT unit with a straight through silencer (which should remove any droning and resonance), then splitting into 2 pipes following the same route as the standard exhaust but with no back-boxes. Not 100% on what tips yet, but almost definately going to be a slash-cut style but curved to the rear valance, either 4" or 4.5". I thought 4.5" would be a bit big, but 4" is everywhere (even Miltek's exhaust for the A5 3.0tdi is a 4" tip), so I'm leaning towards 4.5" now.

Unfortunately it's not booked in until the week after ADI :-(

Spec wise, I'd like Bose, s-line, half leather, cruise etc

whats the tiptronic box like?

No horror stories on the auto box compared to say the old cvt?

does the auto take over and not let you have the gear you want on the down change?

As an owner of the 2.0t B7 I would wager that there's tons more torque off that 3.0lt oil burner which could make life quite exciting drive wise. Downside for me owning the diesel would be possible higher repair bills if anything drastic goes wrong with it....and would you be really gaining more MPG owning the big 3lt diesel lump? I had so much hassle from my previous diesel engined car ...am scared to even mention the "D" word these days...and it would appear on balance that wether it's Audi, Toyota or GM there seems to be more tech difficulties in owning modern diesel engine car than petrol.....Probably get slapped down for that comment. Not sure on road tax / insurance in the UK if there is much difference between the two either. To summarise, I have done nearly 20,000km's in my old Bus since May taken it across Europe and really enjoyed owning it, to the extent that I am going to hold onto to it for a while longer. Good luck whatever you choose and keep us in the loop on your decision.
All the Best

Some options can be retrofitted with OEM parts, cruise for instance is about £250 fitten with OEM parts from an independant specialist.

The tiptronic box is a great combination with the 3.0tdi, there's more than enough power to counter the slightly more relaxed driving style it brings. Power is more of a surge rather than aggressively ripping your face off. Only slight downside is it does take a second of 2 to change gear, which isn'tr quick enough when driving hard or on a track, but day-to-day it's a great combo. I would find it hard to go back to a manual after having this (my 1st auto)...

I agree with your comments about the autobox, but would add that if you're in Sport mode, it's a lot more responsive to kick-down, and if you use the Tiptronic mode, you have full manual control and very quick changes indeed.

Totally agree with you. I find with mine sport mode is alive and aggressive but if just want to tame the beast just put it in D and it will respond reasonably well you have 3 options D , Sport Mode, or Manual. Good options....I would recommend the TIP

I have OEM cruise controll on mine and its fantastic. Yeh I can't see myself going to a manual as enjoy the ease of driving the auto tip (my first as well) I have had 2x B6 Quattro's V6's 180 Manauals in the past and the 3.0 TDI is in a different league (well improved by far)

3.0tdi all the way. I recently changed from a 2.0TQ to a 3.0tdi and haven't looked back. Both my 2.0T and 3.0tdi had ecu flashes, the 2.OT would stick with dads S4 cab off the lights, the 3.0TDI can't, but mid range the 3.0tdi is much quicker than my 2.0T. on a run from devon to Cardiff and back, i got 47mpg out of the TDI and around 39mpg out of the petrol, te diesel has got so much grunt its much better than the petrol, it did take a lot more oil though the other day when I changed it that the petrol. My 3.0tdi avant is completely debaged and more of a sleeper than my old saloon, it upset a chaved up turbocharged Toyota Starlet from the lights the other day when he tried to cut me up too.
