    Engine Mounts

    Hi,

what do people recommend, servicing car today and taking under tray off noticed the mounts were leaking. what replacements are people doing? OEM or others?
im surprised as its only done 60k and only the occasional thrash. tho it has been rocking the car for a while now so i presume this has been causing excessive strain on them. hopefully this will cure my engine shake

I had to get a set for my 2.0 tdi 140 and every local parts specialist said they couldn't get them so bought a set from Audi. I'd sit down when you ask though, they were around £90 each because they have sensors in them.

Why did you get your mounts changed? I've got the same engine as you and my engine rocks at 1500rpm, Ive put it on a Snap on code reader and it came up with something to do with the sensors. Going to see a friend this week to get it put on vcds hopefully to pin point which ones.

    Cheers

im not having any faults on mine but when i was under the car changing oil they were dripping with fluid and under tray was covered in it. only a matter of time before faults appear - just had a price of £300 to get it done

If not looks like i'll be buying the rest next week!!

Im looking to get my mounts eventually changed, noticed the purple fluid yet no error code or shaking as such. Would recommend OEM parts for the 2-year warranty alone!

    i am intrigued by this!
when i sit and rev my car, i can feel the car rock under revs, which originally made me think of worn engine mounts on mine too!
but as i have no error codes or dripping fluid i am reserved to fork out! just in case lol
when you say its like a different car again luke, in what way mate? did your gear changes get any smoother at all? or was it mainly the rock and roll of the engine moving under revs that stopped?
    cheers in advance, chez..

Are you looking from under the car? I couldn't see anything at fault with the mounts above until I took the try off and the evidence was on the tray looked at them and was covered in purple / brown fluid. I'll let you know what improvement if any I get when they come 108 and 115 for the two not happy about the cost but Oem seems the better way, was advised against the others as it will make it a much harsher feel inside

It was just the rock of the engine chez, at around 1500rpm the whole car used to rock while driving to the extent that I would change gear because it p***ed me off. As for the gear change, I've alway found it smooth.

I would have changed all the mounts but i'm off to London on Sunday and already spent too much cash on the car last couple of weeks so I'll do them in another couple of weeks!

Well weekend has come and after picking my parts up.. Reading few threads about changing these bad boys was convinced few hrs it would be done, apparently without having to take mounts off.

Takes a lot longer than most said, don't know if this depends on engine size but 2tdi pasanger side easy, out on ramps, undo engine mounts too bottom, remove screw holding. Swaybar, jack to hold weight of engine remove bracket fit new.

Now the drivers is exactly the same but really hard I get to the top bolt. Turbo is in the way, I removed the pipe from intercooler and give me enought space to get a cutdown 13m spanner in the gap very close to side wall and not space for a socket between turbo.. Took me about hr of fiddling to be convinced to chop a spanner but it worked a treat. Then same procedure, used a jack to push the sway bar back into place all working now..

Now shacking when idling and a lot more smoother n gear changes, just need to change my snub mount now.

Out of interest mines only done 60k what's everyone else on speaking to Audi they said they have never had to change them if so why would mine have given the ghost. Ironically it had been to Audi for injector fault but can't see them doing anything to cause it. Altho they didn't tighten the air intakes properly..

    coolio!
so what was the total cost for all the engine mounts? and were these sourced from audi or TPS?
mine has just turned 83k, so as yours has done 63k it sounds reasonable for me to do this too!
i can feel the engine move when revving when static, not a great deal, but enough for me to notice, and if i change up at fairly low revs (1400rpm for example) the change is not as smooth as if the engine were doing 2500rpm! if that makes sense!
anyway, i am glad you noticed a result that your happy with! so all the hard fiddley work was worth it!

Spoke to alot of other suppliers and no one could source anything for them - 035 motorsports have a version but there full rubber and race spec, speaking around them make it a lot harder inside the car vibration wise.
got mine from stoke Audi 90 for one and 92 for the other.

034 Motorsport mounts are not harsh. There are also 2 density versions (street & track) both of which are perfectly fine for the road. I use the track mounts on mine to great effect. The street density are more suited to the road, and work very well. The feedback from my customers has been superb.

There is a thread in the b5 section about engine mounts, worth a look.

    quick update on this,
i had some mild dash vibrations at low revs, nothing major, but they were not there when i bought the car! they just gradually occured! it just felt a touch rough compared to what it was like.
also, when changing up gear, anything below 2000 rpm was not as smooth as i would have liked.
anything above 2000rpm felt fine which made me suspect my engine was piveting on its mounts more than normal!
and lastly, if i was giving it a bit of a blast from the lights etc or generally going through the gears, and revving high, the next up gear was a bit sloppy to select!
so after reading the lads comments on the posts above i decided to shell out £180 on a pair of genuine audi mounts from TPS.
and i can confirm this has fixed all my little niggles and was well worth the money!
the old mounts were not leaking or throwing up an error code, but there was slight movement on them compared to the new ones! (by hand you could not budge the new ones)
i did not carry the work out myself but got my local garage to do it for me while carrying out other work for me!
very impressed! i love my car again

Has anyone actually used the 034 Motorsport (street) versions of the left and right mounts combined with the 034 snub mount?

i need to change all my mounts and gearbox mount next weekend as my engine lifts excessively under load and when changing gear it drops quite harshly.

Lots of people (if you'd search), supposed to be good but won't plug into the ECU like yours so there'll be a code in vag-com.

Add two reviews together; more vibration with a vag-com error code.

Side with fluid is the one which plugs so I'd imagine when (it somehow knows) this starts to leak and they need replacing it's to inform the reader. Reason behind the assumption is stiffer mounts like RS4 and 034 won't leak and don't plug in.

    cool, i always wondered why!
never had a car with wired mounts before!
i wonder what light on the dash would be, should one fail at all? engine management light maybe?

see i have no lights come on atall but when changing gear the engine moves way to much, now ive just hit 100k and ive had absolutely nothing changed on the car apart from cam belt and water pump, everythings been great with it until now. one or more of the mounts has failed most defiantly the gear box mount has as i hear it reverberate through the cab when accelerating. ive not yet checked the 2 motor mounts but seen as the car owes me £0 in repairs im just going to change all of the mounts in one go. probably doesn't help that i use gears to slow the car down 90% of the time

Hopefully it's just in vag-com as I have RS4 mounts to go on with a B5 snub mount. If anyone could please confirm though as this could potentially make/ruin my day haha hate dash warnings.

yeah, i imagine that will not help things at all! you have brakes for that lol!
i changed my mounts for genuine ones from TPS.
they are made by avon, and it made a lot of difference!

Think im just going to order the 034 stuff as a kit and install them, I mean its only a resistor in the mount i doubt it will effect the car in anyway.

Chez - saves the break disks and pads tho
