Hi i have just bought a 2006 Audi a4 convertible 3.0 tdi quattro, the car drives up to 3rd gear then slips in any gear after that.

I called the main dealer and they told me my gearbox code for the car is JAX.. so ive hunted down and found a 2005 saloon JAX 3.0 quattro box for £700 from an audi breakers, i have had a few quotes from local garages to fit it one saying that it will need to go to Audi to be pressure filled with oil and have the gearbox ECU programed to the car.

I am just after a little help from anyone who may have fitted a gearbox to this spec car, is there anything i should know or look out for..? will the car have to go to Audi for the above..? or will the box work just after being fitted..?

any help would be great.

cheers Jake

The JAX box is the same as mine, the tiptronic one (NOT multitronic). And that sounds about right. It's a sealed unit and the oil should not be changed as the ECU is mounted within the box itselt, however if the ECU has to be programmed to the car it may need to be drained to gain access to the ECU. A specialist would probably be able to drain and re-fill the oil, but recoding the ECU to the car can only be done by Audi. This is going by experience of replacing the HPFP on my old 2.5tdi, has to go to Audi to be recoded also.

Note: It isn't a DSG box.

Good Point jjmurphy, do you know wether the Gearbox oil needs to be changed in our Tip tronic Gear Boxes??

Transmission fluid in the Audi A4 B7 tiptronic auto-box should NOT be changed. It has the potential to cause many problems and a specialist I spoke to said he's had customers with problems after the oil has been changed.

Might be best to speak to Audi on this one, you could be looking at a BIG bill in the long run...

ok..This sounds like its going to be a nightmare, lets just hope the box ive bought is all ok with oil in tak etc

This will seem a really dumb question, especially after i have started a thread about getting my gear box changed, how can I tell which auto box I have?

mine is a 2007 Avant A4 B7 auto quattro 3.0 Tdi?

ZF reccomend 80k oil changes on the 6hp28

Cheers youngy,

How / where can I find my gearbox type?

Is this right?

ZF 6HP 6-speed tiptronic automatic transmission was an option on the quattro four-wheel drive models
