    Cool Tyres

    I need 4 new tyres for my A4 2.0T sLine
    Do I pay around £170 per tyre for a bridgestone or £100 for a NEXEN ?
    Is it false economy buying cheaper tyres?
    What specifice tyres would you recommend?

    As its all that sits between you and the road I would go for the best you can afford.

    Tyres and brakes are the two areas you don't want to skimp on.

    Tyre review websites are good for this sort of thing. If you're going to do a lot of miles get a hard compound (Michelins), if you're going to drive it hard get something with a soft compound which won't last as long. If you don't do many miles and drive very conservatively it would be silly to spend £200 per tyre on a premium brand.

    Well priced sporty tyres are Falkens (452's). I recently got some Vredestein Ultrac Sessantas as they got better reviews than some of the big players and worked out a bit cheaper (£150 each 235/35/19).

    But as sidibear said, would you rather £50 rubber bands stuck your pride and joy to the road, or good quality tyres that will ensure the car, yourself & any passenger stay on the road and not in a ditch...

    I had Falken 452s on my old SEAT Leon Cupra and they were great. I'm currently running Kumho KU39s on my A4 2.0TFSI as they were £50 a tyre cheaper than the Continental Sport Contact 3s that were on it. Sadly on the back I have Marangoni Mythos (were on it when I got the car) they're not the end of the world, I've had worse, but they do sponsor a drift team apparently.

    Of course it's all down to economics at the end of the day....but to pay an extra few knicker to possibly stop you having a prang or God forbid something worse is worth paying the extra imho. Also, some of the latest models improve your mpg and reduce road noise too....although am yet to be convinced!...The chepaest tyre in Swedenshire start at 100 quid...I kid you not....off to Germany on hols this weekend and getting Conti Sport5's for 165 euro per side including fitting and taxes......a bargain for me!

    I agree, I went to a tyre review website and decided to go for the falken 912, it is cheaper than the 452 however it is a more of an all round tyre as opposed to the 452 which is apparently a summer tyre. So far soo good, I have had the car remapped to 180ish and the tyres on the front. Obviously can't compare to the as they were worn but traction on the falkens is good in wet and dry !

    I am certain that someone will disagree with me and always recommend the most expensive tyres, however I am no granny driver and I recommend these !

    Can never go wrong with the eagle f1s about 150 a tyre.

    Got the falken 452's and cant fault them so far. Got mine from Tecso's

    Just to add to the Vredestein's, drove to/from Wales at the weekend during the extremely heavy rain/flooding. The car cut through the surface water at 80+mph and didn't bat an eyelid, car felt planted the whole time. So far I'd buy another set in a heartbeat.

    Grip in the dry is great, slightly better than before but that could be because they're new tyres, (old Conti Sports fitted previously & 1 falken I think?) Plus with quattro it's difficult to push the car safely to the limits of it's traction...

    When I bought my avant it was fitted with eagle F1's and in my honest opinion I thought they were a load of rubbish! I expected a whole lot more for such a pricey tyre.

    I currently use Maxxis at half the price of the eagle F1's and so far am quite happy, they probably last half as long as the F1's but at an even yearly cost I enjoy the maxxis much more on my local cumbrian roads
    They have a lifetime guarantee too which is useful!

    EDIT it's the Maxxis MAZ1 to be precise.

    Also just to add, the Eagle f1's began perishing, cracking and seemed to completely lose any grip when 3/4 of the way through their life which did leave me with some concerns

    Have used Vredestein on my last 6 cars, combo of subarus, S4 and a golf, to me they are just the best out there.

    My Avant came with Michelin Pilots, the rears lasted around 50K and were replaced with Rosso p Zeros, its now on 86K and they look about half worn.
    The fronts were also Pilots and lasted around 25K, replaced with Firestones that felt remote and were noisy, about 20K out of them before fitting P Zeros on the front which were replaced around 5k ago with P Zeros again.

    Falken 452's on each corner with no issues,fitted through event tyres which fit at home or work...hassle free.they gave my Quattro even more grip in the winter and stick like shi* in the summer even with all the roundabouts in MK.the fronts will wear out first quicker than normal which is put down to the milton Keynes effect.....all those bloody roundabouts......
