    2007 2.0 TDi 170 - reluctant to start....ideas?

My 2007 2.0 TDi 170 has 95,000 miles on the clock and has recently been some what lathargic when starting, and seems to be getting progressively worse.

It has a full Audi service history, four new injectors, and was last serviced about 2 months ago. You may be aware from another thread that I've also recently cleaned my EGR valve.

In my mind I ve been blaming the wet weather as its that bit worse after heavy rain.

Sometimes takes three goes to get her to start, but when I do she runs fine!

    Any ideas?

    Rich

Intriguing, although my last injector was replaced well over a year ago and the starting issues has only really been noted in the last couple of months....

My stepdad had this problem with his Leon. He changed the glowplugs and the car started immediately. Worth a try?

I can't remember but it wasn't a huge amount, just need to get a tool to remove them. I'll try and remember to ask.

I think they are about 25 quid each ( not from main dealer ) and I also think they are ceramic so not as straight forward a job as the old metal ones.

    Hello Richard,

I would recommend to test the glow plugs, (connecting to battery and see how they light up and how fast.)
I think they are about 8£ from TPS and as far as tooling goes, I removed the ones on my 140 tdi with a normal long socket.

If it is not the glow plugs it could also be the engine coolant temperature sensor, have you got access to vagcom? It would be usefull to see what temperature it is showing under measuring blocks.

I wouldn't advise testing them across a battery as i'm pretty sure you'll burn them out instantly as they're only designed to work at either 5 or 7 volts (cant remember which).

Just had a dig around and if it is a BRD engine code then they are the more expensive ceramic plugs ( and a pain in the backside ) otherwise they are metal and quite straightforward

    mine are ceramic

    Hello Davees,

Correct me if I am wrong but according to the attached wiring diagram they are 12 v (appreciate this is for a 140 2.0 Tdi)

Sluggish starting could also be caused by a battery that's on its way out...

I agree with Seb and suggest you get the battery tested first.
