remove the front panel, undo pipes and wires, remove the exhaust front pipe/cat, undo all the bell housing bolts, get your engine crane on the lifting hoops, take the weight, and undo the engine mountings, lift it up a touch and wiggle it off the gearbox.
when going back in undo the slave cylinder for the clutch and push it out of the box. otherwise it'll fight your trying to wiggle it back on.

oh and get an aircon company to extract your aircon gas. its illegal to intentionally let the gas escape to the atmosphere.

So a few years since I've taken an engine out a car apart from my nova but that doesn't really count.
I had to take my time as I've never touched an Audi before.
Started about 1pm, and took it slowly, done the usual,"oh look at that" and the usual, "f*k me, well seeing a designer doesn't have to do this", sort of stuff.
Got the engine out and tools tidied up and cleaned up for about 9.30pm I think.
It was straight forward enough but some fiddly jobs, like the connections at the back of the engine and lower middle bellhousing and the usual home mechanics lack of a ramp which must hinder things somewhat.
Anyway it's out and I just need another engine.
